Why is Plex reporting the wrong movie total?

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4930
Player Version#:

Hi

I’ve noticed that the total number of movies reported by Plex does not match the number I have on disk, even after all the disks have been scanned. I have 16 movies that are not showing in the total.

Perhaps Plex has not included all the movies in the database, although they have all been scanned, or the total number is just incorrect?

I have exported the movie list to a spreadsheet using Export Tools and this total agrees with Plex. Next I have a batch file which will scan my drives and create a true list of all the movies. When I have time, by comparing the two I can then find which ones are missing. It’s a bit of a job since I have several thousand.

Is there any reason why Plex would scan a movie and then ignore it? Am I missing something?

Thanks

Maybe they are added as duplicates to an already existing media?
Or completely fails to add due to bad naming or rights?

Try this:
In the WebClient, select your movie library, and on the top left, it’s most likely set to sort on All/Movies/Title

Switch that to Unmatched and after checking that to Duplicates

Maybe some of your movies are combined as collections? When I list by title it shows eg. Alien Collection as one title. If thats not the case you have most likely any configuration issue like incorrectly matched items, wrong permissions on disk, etc.

Let’s not forget: Why is some of my content not found? | Plex Support

Thanks for your replies.

There are no unmatched movies listed and I have taken duplicates into account. There are also no collections and each movie consists of a single file, there are no movies with Part1, Part2 etc.

I guess I’ll just have to figure out which ones are missing and then examine their file names and file rights etc.

If you have collections that hide their contents, I believe Plex reduces the count to just “1”, for the entire collection, if you are sorting by Title.

But, I will say I have found Plex to be inconsistent in showing the proper count even when sorting by “Date Added”, which eliminates the collection count.

After a lot of work I have found the problem!

There are duplicates on my external disks that Plex is completely ignoring. During a scan it does nothing with them, so when you search for a movie on the database there appears to be one copy, but on the disks there are two.

Some of these movies have been on my disks for several years, but because I have several thousand movies, I have not noticed them until now.

So is this a bug, or is there something about these files that make them different. Their filenames are exactly the same as the copy which is being recognised. I shall investigate further!

When you investigate the respective items in Plex… do they show all those duplicate files to be linked/associated with your library item?
You can e.g. see this by editing the movie in Plex (:pencil2:) on the Info tab. Alternatively you can look at Get Info in the movie’s context menu.

If the duplicates aren’t listed in Plex at all… would you mind sharing what file types those are? If they’re disc images (e.g. ISO files) or part of a raw DVD/Blu-Ray folder structure, Plex will ignore those on purpose. Other files should be considered.

The files are all .mp4 and the missing duplicates are not associated with the library item. All files have full rights with no special attributes.

Each duplicate file is on a seperate external disk. If I scan the disk with the hidden duplicate and watch the alerts, for the hidden duplicate Plex displays:

Finished Processing: Movie Title
Finished Processing: Movie Title

and then if I view the movie in the library the hidden duplicate has now replaced the original, and the original has become the hidden duplicate.

So the most recently scanned version of the movie becomes the only linked file to the library item, replacing the original which then becomes a hidden duplicate itself.

This is happening on 16 movies out a couple of thousand in my library.

It took ages to find them
