Why is PMP smoother than Plex app?

Plex app is noticeably choppier/heavier(for lack of a better explanation) than the old PMP it has replaced.
It struggles on my brand new Mac.
If i’m playing music, forget about trying to scroll. Do it enough while playing music and the app and possibly the OS is rendered useless.
Scrolling vertically itself regardless of whether you’re playing music or not is always choppy compared to the smoothness and what seems like the lighter PHP.

Why is this?

Are they written in different languages?

Plex Media Player lives on, is still better, and has many more features.
Plex for Mac is different player, a new app from the ground up.

So there’s two players not one replacing the other per se.

Both can live on your comp if you like.
They come with different names, and store in different folders.
Plex for Mac is in rapid development.

It’s funny (not Ha, Ha), but for me the new app is way smoother than PMP after a recent overhaul to something or other… <----PMP got an ‘upgrade’ at some point recently that pretty much broke it - for me.

I’d love to see the same upgrade for PMP that Plex for Windows just got 'cause that would mean I could use TV Mode again.

@deactivated ?
Have anything interesting to add here?

Plex for Mac uses 25% less cpu for me. :+1:

I mean that’s cool but i was told plex app is literally replacing pmp

You gotta keep up around here… every day is a brand new one in the Plexiverse:

…that’s kinda why I want to see if @deactivated can cast any magic on PMP 'cause that magic he sprayed PFW with worked wonders…

thats awesome
i only want one thing from pmp and that’s the fact that when you scroll vertically and hit an area where movies/tv/music is listed/displayed it starts to scroll horizontally and it’s really annoying. you have to place your trackpad mouse on an area where it wont do that.

[edit]also there is no dark mode top bar

Same for me. Plex is more responsive than PMP, and videos seem to display better (I am using a 9 years old Mac Mini which does not have a very fast video, and the videos seem smoother).

I still miss the info overlay which you could have with Cmd-D, or I in TV mode (which I don’t regret at all!..)

Well, I hope Plex Developers know that every day they wait - is another day PMP is UNUSABLE due to stuttering video <— a condition that was solved OVERNIGHT in the new Plex Player App:

Yea, it’s great they have an idea that might work, but only if they actually implement it and turn it loose on the public at large.

Would you link for us your topic that describes this and includes a sample, logs, and steps to reproduce?

No, I won’t.

That’s been done, they know about the issue, they even know what’s causing it. They can gather their own logs when they reproduce the problem themselves if they need logs. They fixed it in a few hours in Plex Player - when they had a liaison out on the forum actively working the problem. I was involved at that point - gladly - and would do it again under the same circumstances.

For this issue, they’re getting paid to work the issue, I am not. They’ll provide support for PMP like they promised, or they won’t.

Other than complain about it often while it goes untended to, my involvement in the process is pretty much over at this point.

Where? Why would you REFUSE to link the topic?

  1. I’m on my phone. Copy and Pasting links may be fun for some on phones, but I am not one of them.

  2. The threads and links are already present in threads, but if there’s any mystery remaining the PMP team can walk down the hall, or turn to the other guy in the room and talk it over with the Plex Player team.

I look forward to when you get home and can link ANY topic with a sample, logs, and steps to reproduce. Thinking the two players are coded the same is naive. Gesticulating in a thread about PMP being smooth but claiming it’s the exact opposite without supporting evidence is called trolling.

Good luck!

Here, read this one:

… and yes, I AM looking forward to trying that fix out. As soon as it happens.

IF (a big one) after they implement the action described in that post with an update I can install for my PMP - and IF the problem still exists - I might become more interested IF a liaison is out here on the forum actively working the problem like the liaison did when they were fixing Plex Player (in a couple of hours).

The ball is clearly on Plex’s side of the court. All they have to do now is hit it back - after that, I may play for a while. That ain’t trolling. That’s an efficient use of my time.

Damn and less than 10 minutes ago I installed PMP.
Fear not though it was for anything but actually playing back video.
Someone on Reddit just pointed out that PMP still interacts with plugins so I have finally been able to get my server synced from Trakt. :grinning:
That PMP.exe is backed up in 15 different locations.

I hope your playback issues get sorted though.

It’s so simple to provide a sample and steps to reproduce, along with your logs and details, but nope. Instead you’re linking me to your emotions.

With nothing concrete from you to go on whatsoever, I have spare time to read your topics, sir, and your replies. You’re a veteran with thousands of them. Here are some of my favorites:

Indeed.

Hey here’s an idea. Make a new topic with a sample file, steps to reproduce playback issues on Plex Media Player, a description of your network and hardware, and log files in debug mode from player and server.

And please consider this, seriously.

In closing, I would like to compliment you on your excellent reply. Very nicely done sir.

You know what? I just checked out the resource usage and it isn’t even high.
It’s really just the difference between playing a game with vsync on or off. It’s the pmp has vsync on and the new plex app has vsync or ‘hardware acceleration’(or something) off
It’s just choppy, creating the illusion that the app is strugling.

I can’t say what’s up with PMP/New Player on Mac, but the last update for PMP for me (PC) completely fixed all ‘The Jerks’. The update to the New Player just previous to that PMP update fixed The Player. Completely.

What you describe was exactly what I was seeing - now it’s gone.

Here’s hoping you get some of that medicine real soon.

This really sucks for me because it literally stops me from using both apps. New player is jerky/choppy and PMP has scrolling issues.

2 minor things I just know aren’t huge deals to fix and with every new update I get excited that maybe one of the apps fixed their issues but they don’t.

Maybe they found out how to fix it on windows and not mac.
