Why is the Playlist Poster different from the Collections Poster?

I have noticed that the poster I set for my Collections display properly, but that same poster on my Playlist does not. It appears that the image on the Playlist is a square? I have tried to find information on these two images. Why are they two different images to begin with? Using the image from the TPDb does not display properly on the Playlist.

I suppose it’s a design choice.
Plex is using square posters for playlists…

Playlists and collections are different things. They do not share the poster. Both can be generated automatically by Plex so it maybe a coincidence that the same images are used to generate the posters, so they look similar, but they are in fact different.

If the Playlist posters are not showing, that’s a bug and not related to the collection poster. You’ll need to provide more details. I can see playlist posters in the apps I use.

The auto generated images display, but if I choose the poster that I use on the Collection to display on the Playlist it gets cut off on the top and bottom.

I’ve been pondering how collections/ playlists are implemented. Working on a draft for a feature request for collections that would add categories with extra features like displaying a category of collections in a library view or not.

I like the way collections are displayed, however they’re kind of all or not and there are some types of collections I would not want to show up in the library tab, but accessible from the collections tab.

Not sure what you’re trying to get out of playlists, but interested to learn if you’d find value out of a feature like that.

I use playlists to group movies that I want to play in a specific order, but it may be a movie franchise that has movies that make prequels and other movies that are better viewed in a different order. I would like to use the Collection image for this playlist, because this is what it really is, but just in a different order.

For example, the MCU, Aliens, and The Mummy [Scorpion King] all have movies that could be a collection but also viewed in a specific order as a playlist. Since Collections do not allow for ordering movies, I add these to a Playlist.

Plex supports “Custom Collection Order”.

That is already possible with the visibility setting of each individual collection.
