Win10 HTPC and HDMI to AVR nightmare.... anyone else?

Built myself a HTPC (Windows 10) thinking it would be the “ultimate” solution.

Oh, how wrong was I.

Passing audio through Windows to an AVR is a complete joke.

I have enabled all pass through audio options in Plex. Which works, however…

I have set Windows to “Stereo” speaker setup as to avoid incorrect upscaling from Windows to the AVR.

The problem comes when trying to play AAC audio tracks, this is then limited to the stereo.

Do I need to be changing Windows settings dependent on media being played?

Seems a convoluted way of doing things but maybe I am doing it wrong?

Appreciate any pointers.

Thanks.

Hi… You need to set your Windows settings to match the capability of the hardware. So if the HTPC and your sound equipment are capable of 5.1 or 7.1 surround, then you need to tell Windows that.

Once that works, software running on top of that, such as Plex or VLC, will be able to use the hardware correctly, as long as you configure the software correctly.

Thank you.

I was under the impression for some reason that setting windows as say 5.1 caused stereo to be upmixed…

Did this change in Windows over the years?

No, this certainly won’t happen. Stereo tracks will still be stereo.

Not as far as I’m aware. Ultimately, by doing this, you are making Windows aware of the capabilities of your sound equipment.
