Windows 10 Plex Media Player - How to talk with an Un-register Plex Media Server installed on Linux (same network)?

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: Plex for Windows - 1.25.0.1511 and Plex Media Player - 2.58.0.1076

I installed Plex Media Server on Linux.
On my windows 10, I can use http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:32400/web/ to configure the server
On my phone and TV box, I can use the client to find this server (I did not configure, looks the client could find the server automatically).

Now the issue is:
On my windows 10, I tried both Plex for Windows - 1.25.0.1511 and Plex Media Player - 2.58.0.1076, none of them could find the Plex Media Server on Linux.

Did I do something wrong? or on windows 10, I have to use the browser?

Thanks.

They should work straight away, as soon as you log these clients into your Plex account.

Your DNS resolver may throw a spanner in the works, if it does perform DNS rebinding protection: https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections#toc-4

When I use: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:32400/web/ to configure the server, I did NOT login my plex account.

When I test on my phone and TV box, I did NOT login my plex account as well.

All these testing in on my local network. It works perfect.

Why windows 10 is special and I have to login my plex account?

Actually, I have tried, it does not working as well. I believe it is because I did not login on my plex server.

To add to Otto,

On Linux, you must configure / setup the server first before anything will see it.
— with a a browser.

I already configure via: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:32400/web/

my phone and tv box works fine now.

just Plex for Windows / Plex Media Player do not working

I just downloaded plex for windows to test this out and I did have to login to see my server on a local network.

Click sign-in at the top and make sure you are using the same account on your server and client OR make sure that the client account is one that has been shared by the server and accepted by the client account

Thanks. But I did NOT login on my server as well. ( I did not sign in to claim plex server)

So, basically, the windows client has different behavior from phone / tv box client.

If you do not want to login on the server then I would recommend digging around in your local network setup/settings. I would suspect that either your windows 10 machine is set to treat your network as public, your firewall/antivirus is protecting the port access for discovery or GDM is not searching your network to discover the server. Like it was said above (even though it didn’t work for me) it should just work.

Before I was a plex pass member back in the old days this worked fine for me.

I found an older post that seems to say that this stopped working last year and you have to sign in now.

This is NOT my case. I could setup my server via: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:32400/web/
I will dig my windows 10 machine to find out the reason.

:man_facepalming: Sorry, I skipped over that in my skimming. I really think this is related to local network discovery.

I spent some time on my windows 10 and my network.
I also tried the Mac OS version on my Mac machine. The result is same as windows version.

I am not sure it’s a bug or feature.
Maybe this is what Plex current do to force you register your Plex Media Server.
Maybe, sooner or later, phone/ tv box cannot connect unregister PMS as well.
