[Windows 10 Update KB4338819 issue] Conversion Failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

I had the same problem. Noticed two updates very close together like you. Two updates in about a week or so. Started noticing conversion errors. Had a look around the forums and decided to go back a version.

1.13.4.5271-200287a06 is the version I kept getting these errors from - I suspect it has to do with subtitles since disabling subtitles made the playback last longer. But even with disabling subtitles, plex still throws the conversion error at me.

I just uninstalled that version and reinstalled 1.13.3.5223.
So far so good. But will downgrade further if issues arise.

EDIT: Spoke too soon. Downgraded to 1.13.2.5154

Something interesting to add here.

I recorded 6 shows overnight.
I only get 2 HD channels where I live (ABC-CBS)
ABC seems to be the only one getting Transcoding errors.
All ABC shows got the error except for ABC News.
All CBS shows recorded fine.
ABC is my strongest signal.

I think you have to spend some time reading forum posts - you are probably close. A few more minutes!

If you are continuing to get these errors in the logs

ERROR - [Transcoder] [stream_segment,ssegment @ 026a4a80] Failed to open segment list 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/seglist'

ERROR - [Transcoder] av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown error

ERROR - [Transcoder] Error writing trailer of media-%05d.ts: Invalid argument

then we are back to square one with the investigation as was before Microsoft released the fix for their bug

Things to consider

  • A Windows Reboot

  • any security / network management / bandwidth optimizer software you may have that may be blocking localhost requests sometimes - eg http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/seglist

  • if this error with 127.0.0.1 is easily reproducible, then look into using SysInternals Process Monitor to capture all events and stop capture when error is encountered. See Process Monitor - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn
(Process Monitor uses a lot of system resources - so it would not be a tool you would leave capturing events for long - perhaps 10 - 15 minutes max) - the PML files you save the capture into would be massive but they do zip very well (The zip would need uploading to dropbox or similar service and link can be sent to me by Private Message - would needs the zipped PMS logs for the period)

Ok this solution worked for me. In a different post somewhere someone mentioned updating a specific windows update. I have no idea why it worked but here it is:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4345421/windows-10-update-kb4345421

You already posted a solution in a different set of posts that were a similar (but not the same issue). It worth indicating to other users at least to try this before jumping through the ā€œinstall previous versionsā€ through. Here’s a link to the update that worked for me and lots of others.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4345421/windows-10-update-kb4345421

Here is the update

This is actually the subject of most of the posts in this thread and it was in this thread that this issue was unearthed and the windows updates identified !

Yes Microsoft issued a bad windows update which resulted in some 127.0.0.1 requests made by the Transcoder fail - Microsoft, 6 days later, released the 2nd windows update which fixed it and that is the one in your link

Still having the issue on Windows 2012 R2, all updates installed  Done just about everything i can think of to fix it now.

Which issue specifically?

This error in the log
ERROR - [Transcoder] [stream_segment,ssegment @ 026a4a80] Failed to open segment list 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/:/transcode/session/xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/seglist'
or the generic error Conversion Failed: The Transcoder exited due to an error ?

The generic error could be returned for many different underlying errors / issues. Have you posted logs anywhere of the problem?

If it is the 127.0.0.1 transcoder request erroring then have a look at my earlier post

ā€œConversion Failed: The Transcoder exited due to an errorā€ Still getting this multiple times a day, and the users I have complain about it aswell. I have all updates installed.

I think I mentioned several times before that this is a generic error that just means there was a transcoder failure. There could be hundreds of different reasons for why they may arise. The steps to take would be first to confirm the media files are ok and play ok with other players and with that confirmed then to get logs from the server to see what the issue is. Sample files may then be requested.

Well ive never had this issue before and ive used plex for years, started last week and has escalated since. I run Emby next to Plex, and everything plays there without issue, tested the videos in question in VLC aswell without issue.

I just received the same error tonight, running the latest public release. I can’t download the latest beta as I am not yet a paying customer, not sure why I should even consider this if the software doesn’t work to begin with.

Yesterday Plex worked fine. Today, I keep getting this error. On the latest public version of Plex. From skimming it, it looks like it is an windows update issue which Microsoft need to release a fix… but just in case here are my logs

Running into this issue a lot. Just recently started logging as a result, so logs might not reflect the full extent of issues I’m hitting.

Using PMS on Windows 10 PC -> Roku

Logs attached. Would really appreciate some insight on how to fix, super frustrating.

It is the same issue as was seen when windows 10 users applied windows update July 10, 2018—KB4338819 (OS Build 17134.165) - Microsoft Support

Could you list the windows update history and see what was applied recently for your windows 8.1 OS

May be there was a windows 8.1 update with same issue.

The windows 10 issue with the update was fixed by a further update July 16, 2018—KB4345421 (OS Build 17134.167) - Microsoft Support

same issue as a large number of people here seem to be stating - ā€˜Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.’ when all media files that have failed work perfectly in other players.
