Plex desktop has been working fine until yesterday after an apparent Windows 10 update. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a workaround? I can still use the browser-based version of Plex but I really like the convenience of the desktop app.
Make sure the Windows update did not replace your graphics adapter driver software. Try to find an up-to-date version of the driver and install it.
Uninstall the player, then install it again from a fresh download.
Try the pre-release from here: Plex for Windows and Plex for Mac forum preview releases
No recent graphics driver updates (Latest was 6/19). Reinstalled the pre-release as suggested but got the same result. The icon shows up on the taskbar as if started but hovering over it reveals a blank PLEX screen with a non-functional Settings button. Any other ideas?
Close the player, then empty out the data folder of it.
(this will remove any downloaded media and require a new signing-in)
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Plex
Don’t confuse this with the data folder of the server! Otherwise you may wipe all your server data.
Do you mean all sub-folders except the “Plex Media Server” folder?
Argh, NO!
DON’T TOUCH the Plex Media Server folder!
Please read the message above again. Empty out the folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Plex and NOT C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server.
“Empty out” = remove all its contents
Actually, I knew what you meant about that. I was talking about the “Plex Media Server” folder within the “Plex” folder. I didn’t touch the primary server folder. Anyway, that seems to have corrected the problem (at least for now since I don’t know why it got corrupted to begin with…). Thanks so much for your speedy help with this!
Phew! I panicked there for a bit.
No, the Plex Media Server folder within the Plex folder is actually part of the player (it handles the “downloaded” media).
