I have been putting a series, Foyle’s War, onto my server for Plex. The first 3 seasons worked fine in terms of metadata, but starting with season 4 there were problems. There are 4 episodes. The first two are correctly named, but episodes 3 and 4 are just called “episode 3” and “episode 4” without metadata. The first two episodes of season 5 are named incorrectly with the names that should have been assigned to episodes 3 and 4 of season 4, and the last episode of season 5 has no name other than “episode 3.” Season 6 has 3 episodes named with the 3 episodes of season 5 instead of season 6.
Clearly this is an issue with the TVDB. If I try to go to that website, the browser hangs, and I see nothing. Is their website down??? The shows are correctly listed and named in IMDB, so is there a way I can add IMDB as a source for metadata so it points to the correct information? Or is there something else I can do to get the episodes named correctly?
It looks like TheTVDb and your source (DVD?) use a different approach for the seasons.
According to TheTVDB.com there’s only 2 episodes for season 4 (which aired in Jan 2006)… this is the reason Plex cannot find any metadata for anything beyond episode 2 of that season.
It looks like what you’ve got as season 4 is actually seasons 4 and 5 based on TheTVDb… while your season 5 is matching with season 6 of TheTVDb.com.
Yep in actual fact I think its imdb that’s way off.
Those two episodes in season 4 and the two in season 5 aired 13 months apart. So it’s a far stretch for IMDB to call those 4 episodes a single season.
TVDB seems pretty accurate to me.
Thanks. I guess I’ll change the order/numbering of my folders and then I’ll have the correct metadata.
I understand that it might be “a stretch” for IMDB to be calling those four episodes a single season, but that is also the way they’ve come on the DVDs.
Yeah I do get what you’re saying however tvdb and therefore Plex has no interest in DVD release dates. Its all about when an episode first aired on TV (absolutely nothing else).
Had DVD’s release dates mattered, then in effect no show ever existed before 1996. If its a show that has never been released on DVD then it was never filmed.
Its just better to use IMDB as a last resort. If anything contradicts with IMDB assume the other source is correct until you know any different.
TVDB or TMDB aren’t perfect but generally they are reasonably accurate, meanwhile IMDB is anything but accurate in many cases.
