Xbox one app no longer able to find server

I just started having this issue within the last week. I run my Plex Server (version 9.16.3.1840-cece46d) on a Mac Pro. All clients work except the Xbox One. This is frustrating as I just sold my Mac Mini that was my living room client because the Xbox One was working great and didn’t see the need for both.

What I have tried:

  • Logout of App and log back in
  • Logout of App uninstall app, reinstall app and log back in
  • switch Xbox users and log in
  • Logout of server and log in
  • Reboot Server
  • Change Security Settings on both Xbox Client and Server
  • downgrade server version (I have since gone back to current version)
  • optimizing database

Nothing seems to work. I am starting to get a little discouraged. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have been a Plex Pass member for a long time and have been an advocate for Plex for many years. This is really the first issue I have ever run into. I have attached my log file directory.

@gmbeason Is your server and Xbox One on the same network subnet?

Yes, they are on the same network subnet. Just to test it out I downloaded the Plex Server on another Mac in my house and set it up. After turning off the faulty server the Xbox One was able to connect to the new instance of Plex Server on the other Mac. I dumped preference files on the Mac Pro for Plex Server and there was no change, so I put them back. I am guessing that I can probably wipe all my settings off the Mac Pro and reinstall from scratch, but I don’t really want to lose my info like what has been watched and date added, etc. Plus there were a ton of movies that I had to fix the “Incorrect Match” on which I’m not looking forward to. I took the liberty in my troubleshooting to change the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server to ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server-OLD so it would create a new folder and remapped my media for the sake of testing. The XboxOne does now see the server and connects properly. If you could advise me as to where the issue may lie so I could remove whatever file or files that may be corrupted in the OLD directory and keeping the server from connecting I would appreciate it. In the meantime I at least have the means to watch my media so I don’t have hysterical children, lol.

Update I went to watch something on my AppleTV 4th Gen and under “Home” it says “Nothing to See Here” Search is able to find and play media though. I thought maybe the database file was corrupt. I ran the commands found in the fixing database support article. First command showed the db as “ok” but I ran the repair scripts anyway. This did not correct the issue. Here is a link to a copy of my /Plug-in Support/Databases directory.

@gmbeason Could you temporarily share the problematic server with me? I may be able to reproduce the issue from my dev console. If so my Plex username is moussa.uk.

sent you invite

@moussa.uk You take a look yet?

@gmbeason I had a try and I managed to connect to and play something on your server just fine. If you visit https://plex.tv/api/resources when signed into plex.tv can you confirm your server has the expected published address and that your Xbox One can connect to that IP address?

Haven’t been able to try the Xbox One yet, but the Apple TV still says “Nothing to see here”. I tried that link on my laptop and got nothing. Do I need to follow that link on the Xbox? Ok, I did it from Chrome and got a XML dump and the public and private addresses are correct.

On your Xbox One or Apple TV can you try visiting your server addresses from the console browser?

Went on MS Edge on the Xbox and typed in the local address:port and it gave me an XML file.

@gmbeason That’s a good sign then that your Xbox One can indeed reach the server address that is published on plex.tv. You say that the Apple TV app also can’t connect to the server, is that still true?

Well, even though I got that result in Edge, the Plex App on the Xbox still shows my server as offline and says there is a problem communicating with the server and I try to go back or select a different server and it just keeps trying to connect to the bad one and errors out. The Apple TV is still having the issue where it says “nothing to see here” in the Home section and says there is no media, but if you search for something it finds it. Just really bizarre. Not a huge deal as I have built a new library, but would just love to know what happened and if it can be fixed.

So annoying. At this point I have no other option but to assume it just doesn’t work on XBox One. Rating it one star in the xB store and telling my friends to avoid

Don’t let a configuration issue on your end ruin an accurate rating system for everyone else. I’m rating you 1 star.
