Xbox One app suddenly no audio

@LimpTool said:
I am in the Insider program and noticed the audio stopped working. Seems to only impact the TV shows. In the Audio Stream settings under the show that is being streamed it’ll say Unknown AAC Stereo. The same show will work just fine on my PC or on another device. There is another Insider update today, so maybe that’ll fix it.

Did the latest update on xbox insider fix it @LimpTool because I can switch to the insider builds if necessary.

@Moussa is there any news about this issue? I’m having to watch plex through my TV instead of my xbox which is not what I pay for the pass for.

I think I’m having a similar problem. When I play a video there is no sound and if I check the receiver input, it says it’s set to analog. If I back out into the plex UI it goes back to MultiTech PCM 7.1. One odd thing is when I’m in a video and the receiver is saying its input is analog. I can power off the receiver and power on I have sound and it’s 7.1. This started with the Xbox update on 5/18

No and it hasn’t been resolved in the updates since then either. Got an update last night and it’s still happening.

Mine happens to all TV shows pretty much. Most movies have audio, but a few don’t. They all have the same audio format so I cannot think of a thing that is different.

No news here. This isn’t something we can reproduce ourselves, and as far as I know it’s a known issue with the Insider builds.

@Moussa I confirmed that I’m not on an insider build for the Xbox One, confirmed that a reinstall of the Xbox Plex app yielded no change, pulling power on all devices associated yielding no results. It appears generally limited to TV show category, with AAC audio codec, other codecs appear to work fine. I have attempted with multiple Xbox one’s and multiple Plex servers. The issue is independent of the Plex server and unique to specific Xbox consoles. One is an Xbox One S and the other a non S or X Xbox One. The specific file tested plays without issue via both web interface and via pc through the plex app. The issue has been present since the april update for Xbox OS, with the May update deployed yesterday with no change. The audio streams appear to be incorrectly interpreted as an unknown MP3 stereo stream on the Xbox One Plex app. I did review the last log and though I’m not intimately familiar with Plex logs as I’ve never dived into them, it looks like the audio stream from the server log indicates the AAC audio codec is being used.

For whatever my 2 cents is worth, perhaps this is a communication issue exacerbated with the changes initially made with the April update?

So I also have the same issue. Same versions as above, same problem with AC3.
I have however found a work around.
It seems when you start the film / TV it switches audio formats and sends a signal to your TV/AV reciever to play the new format.
My Pioneer reciever thinks about this and then doesnt play audio.

My fix.
I switch the reciever to standby while the content is playing, let the passthrough kick in, then switch the amp back on.
It then picks up the audio.

Tested it several times with multiple AC3 files, same with all of them.

All other games, TV, BluRay discs, music on the Xbox all work fine.

Trying different audio settings on my xbox have no effect, same with reciever settings.

Although it sounds like a reciever issue I have no similar issues on other devices or even when playing the same content through the xbox media player.

It only happens in Plex.

I’m also having this issue. I’m not using an insider build on the Xbox One (never have).

Latest point release of PMS, there appear to be no updates for the Plex app on the Xbox One.

I’m also having to resort to running Plex through my TV, so I guess I have a workaround. Not ideal but it’s workin’. Just wanted to chime in that it’s happening to me too.

EDIT: this is happening to both movies and TV shows. My workaround seemed to be to quit the Plex app and restart it. But then I have to do that each and every time I try to watch something new.

I can use my headphones and get sound, but nothing through the stereo speakers.

Just got home from work, noticed that there’s an update for Plex!! Installed, restarted… nope, still no sound on any files with AAC audio.

However, okay this is odd, I then opened up Plex on my phone and told it to cast the same movie to Plex on the Xbox One… I now have sound. Uhhhhhhh… :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT: for clarification, I meant to write that I noticed there’s an update for Plex on the Xbox One.

EDIT #2: annnnnnnd that didn’t hold. We stopped the movie for dinner, started it back up again via casting from the phone to the Xbox One. No audio again. …went back to casting to the Chromecast.

Thank you @Mattsurrey your workaround gets the audio on for me.

  • press play on the offending video
  • turn the amp off and wait a few seconds
  • turn the amp back on
  • rewind the video so you don’t miss anything

@Moussa that’s a few of us with the issue, we can’t be the only people. My amp is Denon, @Mattsurrey has a Pioneer system. Are you testing for this at Plex? I’ve had this issue now since the Xbox April update. No insider builds here.

My new workaround is actually just running the legacy Plex app on the PS4 instead of the Xbox. Taking some getting used to as the Xbox One was truly the center piece of my set-up. No biggie though. …once I get used to it, the Xbox One app will then get fixed (probably). :stuck_out_tongue:

You can also add me to the list of people who are having this issue. I would play a show and the sound would work for 3 - 5 seconds then cut off entirely. Oddly enough restarting the app doesn’t work as all my sound seems to stop working until i turn everything off and back on again. I’m using a Panasonic speaker system.

This has left to having to cast plex to my chromecast instead of playing through the xbox.

Hey guys I disabled display mode switching, allow direct play and allow direct stream. All audio formats are playing now.

@derekhutton@sbcglobal.net, I had those disabled too but was still experiencing the ‘mute bug’.

However, I appear to have audio 100% working again. I noticed that I’d had the app saved to my external drive. Figured what the heck… so I moved it to the internal drive of the Xbox One X.

…so far, two nights in a row now - audio has been playing for everything we’ve tried. We stopped, and started a few movies. So far so good. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You wouldn’t happen to be a part of the insider preview ring would you?

This worked for me as well. I’m in the alpha ring insider program and today got a new update for Plex. I tried just the updated version of Plex first but it didn’t work. The only change I had to make was disabling the Allow Display Mode Switching in the video settings.

Disabling “Display Mode Switching” so far has fixed the the no audio issue for me on my Xbox One, and i am in the Xbox preview. Glad i came across this post as i had been going nutz not being able to watching stuff on my main tv and had resorted to watching the titles that played with no audio on my Xbox, on my PC.

Plex App Info: 2.11.0.70

Plex Server - 1.13.2.5154
