I’ve upgraded my Xbox One S to a X model, and now have issues playing some movies.
I will say that I also upgraded my TV and AV receiver as well(details below). But I didn’t notice the issue until the Xbox One X. IE, I upgraded my TV and AV receiver prior to upgrading to the XBox One X.
What’s funny, is that all my movies were ripped with the same software, and settings. Yet some will play and some won’t, even when they report the same encoding(see attachments). In this case, Shrek(first one), and Shrek 2(not pictured) have this issue. But Shrek the 3rd, does not, and plays just fine.
@dawgbonez Are the files mkvs? Can you try disabling Allow Direct Play in the app settings and see if that helps? We’re working on a solution for this if that is the case.

Indeed they are! And your suggestion worked for me.
I’ll wait for a fix.
Hi, i have the same problem i think, everything that is MKV (i will test some more formats) seems to judder, stop and start or give the same message since the new version of plex on xbox one.
If i turn direct play off it works, so thanks for the solution. I was wondering if i could have a bit more technical understanding to what the direct play does and why it doesn’t work?
As I’m sure you’re aware, the “Allow Direct Play” issue isn’t isolated to just Xbox One S & X. I just purchased an LG OLED65C7P and its built-in base app that detects my PLEX server plays MKV Bluray rips flawlessly and without my Synology DS418Play server breaking a sweat. Due to the crude and next to useless GUI on the LG, I installed the PLEX app. As soon as I started watching the exact same movie, playback started buffering excessively. A quick check of the stats on the PMS and the CPU was 90+%…
I get the same exact excessive buffering results watching movies on my Xbox One S via PLEX.
Unfortunately disabling the Allow Direct Play doesn’t alleviate the problem for me.
How do I go about getting the logs to send for troubleshooting what settings I may have set incorrectly. Is it from PLEX on the server, or from the server?
Well this is a major problem. I just upgraded my Xbox One to an X because I was having some annoying but manageable issues with it. The vast majority of my files, particularly my movies are in mkv containers. I have disabled the Allow Direct Play option in the settings but I still get the same buffering problem with most of my files. This little bug has virtually rendered Plex useless on my primary TV. Are there any other suggestions on fixes until the bug is sorted out? Do you have any ETA on when you expect the problem to be solved? Please hurry up with this.
Aye xbox one s here. major buffering issues only with h.265 encoding at any format. If I watch it on my android phone or tv it’s fine but I really want the xbox and my windows 10 PC to be able to play them. so far all other plex clients on outside devices play extremely nice and very sharp at this encoding level all the way up to 4k h.265 encoding. h.264 encodes work very well on xbox one S. It’s just the h.265 issue here.
If play the h.265 encoded m2ts or mkv file directly off the drive without using plex player it works very well. Only windows version of plex player on windows 10 and Xbox seem affected.
What i want to use plex for doesn’t work now, so I think im going to give it to the end of the month and if it isn’t fixed by then i am going to cancel my plex pass subscription and possibly switch to another media server. Which is a shame but i’m getting a little fed up with waiting.
