Yamaha AV Receiver

I’m having trouble finding an answer to this so i’ll lay out all the facts, hopefully someone can answer. If the answer is a definitive, no you cannot do that, that’s ok…it’s just bugging me attempting and failing to get it to work.

My Goals
NAS server for all my music and movies/tv series organised and backed up
All media centrally available
Easy to use interface for searching and watching movies/series
Nice interface for albums - if i have the tv on, or i am listening through another device
Doesn’t screw with my tags, and split albums up
Wired connection to the Lounge where the TV/sound system is
Music can be played without switching on TV - controlled from Phone

My Setup
Netgear D6200
QNAP TS 212 - connected to Netgear Raid 1 mirroring all Media
Cabled to 8 port switch in Lounge

Lounge
Sony Bravia TV
PS3
Intel nuc
Yamaha RX-V479 and 5 speakers

What works well
PS3 power up switches on TV and Receiver
Free to Air TV
BD player button starts TV and receiver to channel for nuc - shake mouse to wake it up (nuc)
Plex server looks and works perfectly from all devices - media is organised, plays all media no problem (TV/Nuc - PC’s - Phones - Tablets)

The Problem
Centres around this statement “Music can be played without switching on TV - controlled from Phone”
This is working - if i use the Yamaha MusicCast App and connect it to my server (not the plex server) - but it’s not pretty, file folder interface.

My ideal is to be able to use the Plex app to cast from the server to the Yamaha - without the TV being on. (because the interface is pretty, and we all like pretty things)
The Yahama is DLNA compliant, however when i attempt to cast from PlexMedia server to the Yamaha, all i have on my Android phone is Airplay - if i press it it does nothing, didn’t think it would TBH.

Shouldn’t i also be able to see the option to connect using the DLNA connection from Plexmedia server App?

If i should - any advice on why i cant? I feel like i’m missing something. I have enabled the DLNA server in Plex settings.

Any help appreciated. I have been trawling through the forum, looking for tips and trying different settings for a few days.

Thanks in advance

Did you figure it out? I have the exact same issue with my Yamaha rxv779…

No not yet

Plex Apps are not DLNA clients so they are unable to control, fling to, or even see DLNA devices. Because of that you will need some other app that is a DMC (Digital Media Controller) that can connect to the DLNA server and forward requests to and from the server and the receiver.

Any updates on this? I would love to use the nice GUI interface of Plex remote app while being able to play music directly from a receiver without having to turn on the TV and navigate through various menus (be it roku or xbox or smart TV). My ideal setup would be push one button on my remote (to turn on receiver) and then control the rest through the plex app. Is this even remotely possible? (pun intended)

I’m just starting to experiment with the Plex server now, but my situation is a bit similar. I also have part of the answer for you - The Yamaha receiver is a DLNA client itself, so the missing piece is not from Plex, but something that can act as a two-way remote to the receiver so you can control the receiver while browsing the media being served from the Plex DLNA server. In other words, the same as using the native remote to push buttons and your TV to see what’s going on. Yamaha actually has their own free app that works ok for this. There is also exactly one other possibility, which is Simple Control (https://www.simplecontrol.com, formerly Roomie Remote). I fiddled with this guy a bit but never invested the many hours necessary to get it working. Perhaps they’ve improved their documentation since then, though.

If you are looking for an Audio-only Plex Client, how about a Chromecast Audio?

I have similar setup.
Checking profiles, I use a tool (Device Spy) to identify all DNLA Cleints, SERVERS and Remote Contorles, in my network. Unfortunately Yamaha 479 didn’t appear in the tool list, so I’m not sure if the DRC can be used without a third app.
Like other says, Plex app (at least android) can’t work like a DRC; maybe you can try to create a custom chanel to do what you looking and installing in your Plex server (don’t know how to do that).

Do you try BubbleUPNP ??, can act like DRC in dlna networks and is preaty easy to use. This app work fine in my network and hardware.

I use Yamaha app (for andorid), is not so bad to use and play with audio, and is not neesary to have TV ON to use it with DLNA server + Yamaha 479.

Touching base here: did you ever figure out how to control the receiver without the TV and without having to download Yamaha’s app?
