I recently updated my plex media server to the latest version. Shortly after I noticed I was unable to make just about any changes to the library. Simple alterations such as changing the title name of a media file or adding a folder to a directory already in existence are greeted with “your changes could not be saved” almost immediately. The same is stated when I attempt to optimize the database, empty the trash, or clean bundles. Remote access shows I’m not connected yet others continue to view my media and I’ve accessed the server outside of the network with no interference. When looking at the general tab on the server the area which states the version and whether or not I need an update it states “oops something went wrong”, “please install manually”. I’ve restarted the server several times, restarted the computer several times as well. I’ve reinstalled the latest update manually and even went back and selected “repair” on the install, along with the required restart for it to take effect. All with the same results. Is there an abundance of problems with the new update or am I the only one experiencing such a thing?
I’ve added an additional hard drive and was hoping to shuffle some things around, but presently I can’t modify the directory. I can add an additional tabs in the library and redirect it there, but wouldn’t be able to delete the old one, making for duplicates and the like. It’s all pretty much hamstrung my new purchase. Any help would certainly be appreciated!
Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I haven’t altered the location at all. The operating system still remains on the same drive. The additional drive was just purchased for excess storage on top of a few I already had. I do wish I could just return to the prior update and call it a day but when I attempt to it wont allow due to having a later version, and I don’t want to uninstall and start over as I’d lose everything.
note down your current Plex Server software version
Stop Plex Server using its tray icon.
uninstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows. Do not use 3rd party ‘uninstaller’ software like Revo etc. Do not use Registry cleaners/optimizers.
go to your Plex data folder.
There is a subfolder in there, named Updates which will contain previous versions of the installer .exe
execute the installer for the previous software version
reboot Windows (just a safety measure, it may work without rebooting as well)
I’ll attempt this now and let you know how it goes. Thanks, I was worried about painstakingly having to add all the metadata all over again. I’ve spent many a night and had many arguments with the spouse over it LOL
activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
If you cannot change this preference with the GUI, then close plex server, unzip this archive secure_preferred.zip (386 Bytes) and double-click the .reg file instead
So I’ve somewhat solved this problem… In my efforts to find a solution I’ve come across the Plex Media Player I had downloaded on to my PC some time prior. I resorted to firing it up and immediately noticed it informed me of an update to the server. On the player all the issues I pointed out are not present. I can update the libraries and change metadata. Through this app I then updated the server, updated the player and have since shuffled a few things around to test it.
Although the issue I was having prior might still be significant as previously I would just access plex.tv and launch my server through the Brave browser. After updating and using the app I went back to Brave to test it and the problem still remains. I’ve used that method for years without issues and will now just resort to player, pretty much means I just can’t edit the files from anywhere other than the PC, but that’s fine for now I guess.
Thanks for your help, still open to solutions if anyone checks the logs and discovers the problem.
What is that?
If it’s some kind of special browser build which disables browser features and removes stuff from web pages, then I’d expect major issues with the web app.
Thanks, there are no signs of database corruption in your logs.
That’s indeed the Brave browser I speak of. It’s billed as being more secure and private. I’ve been using it for at least a year now solely to stream Plex. Laughably I just signed into the Plex server via Firefox and all the features worked without problem. Perhaps Brave recently had an update which indirectly blocked some necessary components…?
