The latest players on both Android and iPad buffer more than they play when Casting. And, weirdly, the playback options menu has disappeared from both players, making it impossible to enable subtitles or change transcoding settings.
Plex has been my main method of TV playback for around 20 years, suddenly it’s completely unusable
I am having the same issue. Impossible to use chromecast with the latest update on 4K files… It was working perfectly before. And as you noted, it’s a pain to enable subtitles now (you need to stop the play, select the subtitle, then restart playing).
I wanted to come back to the forum to say thank you to the Plex team for fixing the issues with Chromecast playback!! I’m back to being able to recommend Plex to anyone who’ll listen
I’m not sure whether the forum is monitored by Plex staff, but on the off chance it is there’s another Chromecast bug introduced recently that I’d be absolutely overjoyed if it could be fixed:
When playing on Chromecast from iOS or Android, it used to be simple to continue watching while moving to a different room simply by disconnecting the Chromecast; playback would cease on the Chromecast, which would return to the Google default view, and playback would continue on the mobile device.
Now, disconnecting Chromecast only affects future actions - the app is shown as disconnected, and any future playback will be on the mobile device, but the video continues playing through the Chromecast.
So, continuing watching during a short trip to another room now requires you to stop playback, disconnect the Chromecast, navigate to the video and resume playback. And when you return to the TV room, because the Chromecast button has been removed from the player view, you now need to stop playback, connect to the Chromecast, and resume playback. Each of these previously could be achieved with a single action, and without stopping playback.
If there’s any way I can be involved in fixing this I’m more than happy to help - heck, if it were open source I’d fix it myself and submit a PR
Hey there @chris_bc - what version of the Android Plex app are you using as Chromecasting is still not working for me? It may be it hasn’t picked up the latest update but if you could let me know which is the version you have Chromecast working I’d like to try out it. Thanks
Oh! Thank you @vilisseranen, I had concluded they’d removed the ability to view subtitles on mobile for some reason but you’ve pointed me in the right direction to find it!
I still haven’t figured out a way to change transcoding settings since the player view lost all its features either, for those times when you need to save bandwidth on the go.
I’m guessing there must be nobody working at Plex who uses a Chromecast, or Plex on their phones
Her @DarkKman, looks like 2025.18.0 on both iPad and Android - the AirPlay button was also re-added to the player view in this version (but not the Chromecast button, still have to stop playback and return to the overview page for that)
Alas, this still isn’t working for me (on this new version). Same issue as upon release of the “New Experience” version of the Plex App. I see the Chromecast button and it sees my Chromecast but just get the spinning icon on the Chromecast then times out and won’t actually connect. Very frustrating… Back to the last working version again for me. But pleased its working for some and hopefully will be resolved at some point.
