Unable to load external subtitles on chromecast

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9522
Player Version#: 2025.10.1(96682329)

after performing the latest plex android app update (Samsung S21) , suddenly external subtitles are no longer loaded while casting [i have tested multiple movies files and the issue remains the same]

for a test i had another phone still with the old plex version [10.26.0.2578] and it can load the same external subtitle(s) without any issue.

any idea about this issue? and how can it be fixed?

thanks in advance

do we have any update about this?

Hi there,
I have the same issue using Chromecast after the update to latest version of Android app (Samsung S22). On a phone that still has the older version (S10), the subtitles work just fine.

after re-checking google play store , plex latest update has been removed.

thus after uninstalling /reinstalling again , the issue was fixed on the impacted device.

current available version as of April 6th , 2025 : 10.26.0.2578

a new version has been pushed to google play store v2025.11.1 , and the issue remains the same

Exactly the same problem (Samsung Galaxy A51). Also tested on multiple files. Also used another device with the old version - and it worked. Please fix it. Otherwise Plex is pretty much useless for me.

the only workaround that i have tested for android users is to visit

and download the last working version " Plex for Android 10.26.0" and disable auto-update till we have a fix

@ChuckPa
I don’t know if Plex themselves are aware of this
Should probably be posted in another subforum for more visibility.
My sister is also experiencing the same issue regarding subtitles via chromecast since the app update

Same issue here, casting from iOS to both my ChromeCast and ChromeCast Ultra results in no subtitles when the new app is used. I managed to block app updates on my other iOS device so it can keep the old Plex app, and casting from this device works perfectly with subtitles.

Casting from new app either iOS device or android device to
a. google chromecast Ultra
b. built-in chromecast of android TV

will NEVER show subtitles of ANY format, be it internal .srt, external .srt or whatever.
It supposedly transcodes them to WEBVTT but they aren’t displayed.
Touching the “CC” button on the app it momentarily flashes orange and nothing happens.

This is still NOT FIXED…!

Casting from old android version, it direct plays .srt with no problems.
