7.29.1 (had to side load it) fixed this issue for me as well. Thanks Plex team for getting this issue fixed.

How do you roll back using the Plex server built into Nvidia Shield?

The issues described in this thread are Plex client related.

The latest beta version has fixed my 4K transcoding issue. YAY!!

For what its worth. I have 2+ identical FTV 4k sticks - one playing direct no problems, and one terribly laggy and transcoding 1080p with poor quality. I did factory reset and still have the lag. But the bigger issue related to transcoding made playback looked like crap even after a factory reset and reinstall of Plex client. On the Plex android client, there is a setting under the Advanced topic called H264 maximum level which was set for some reason to 1.0 on the one device I reset while 5.1 on another (I hadn’t changed anything on either). I changed it and now fixed the direct streaming issue. I havent tested 4k yet but will later as not sure how it relates to HEVC, if at all. Figured this might help some others and sorry if this was known but was aggravating me. Now if I can figure out why my one FTV and remote is acting like its running on a 486 I would solve the other issue.

FTV 4k has a number of issues
 The Android ExoPlayer has issues

If you sideload or are running 7.27.1.15203 or lower of the Plex client you can go into setting and disable use new player.
There are new beta versions of the Plex client, 7.30.0.16150 seems to work. there is a new one just haven’t had time to load and test. They seem to work with the new player if you upgrade the FTV 4k itself

This is absurd, its been 7 days since you posted this, and 7.28 is still the latest version on my firestick 4k
 wtf???

A post was split to a new topic: Issues with Subtitles

it’s just as well, since i stated that the 7.29 version fixed my issues, it turns out it does not. it only fixes a few issues. I rolled back to 7.27.0 myself.

Yep, this worked. Uninstalled the newer version and installed this. Back to Direct Play again. Thanks!

FYI - Using Fire 4k Stick. Used ES File to install. Put the above downloaded file in a shared drive on one of my computers. Had to uninstall the existing version for it to work, but back to good playback of 4K again. What a pain in the ■■■■ to have to do this! Anyways, thanks again for getting me back up and running with this post!

Its April 22, 2020 and Plex on Firesick still kills local 4K transcoding. I rolled back (via side-loading) to 7.27 as indicated here and it works again. Never stopped working on Hisense Roku TV, Never stopped working on PC.

What app version are you running on the Firestick? Is it a regular stick or 4k stick? For me this problem was fixed a few versions ago for my 4K stick.

As of May 15 2020 I also experienced transcoding of 4K HEVC (H.265) movies on Fire TV Stick instead of Direct Play. I believe the server was trying to transcode to H264 at 4K although can’t recall if that is accurate.

I got it to work by rolling back to the older version of the Plex TV client.
I loaded the old version (7.27.1.15203) as indicated in the other post.
I had to allow installation of Apps from Unknown Sources under Developer Options under My Fire TV settings. Just in case I also turned off automatic updates under Appstore Application settings.

I copied the apk to a network share drive then installed it as described using ES File Explorer
I thought ES File Explorer was free, it made me do a free trial subscription
I just used it because I had it, I will have to find better free software to do any installs in the future.
