About Plex Scanner and Agent

Nas: Synology
DMS version: DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4
Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#:

I had a problem using the plex default agents when refresh Metadata recently.
When I search the Metedata, it get nothing, shows No matches found.
But it can search Metedata before, and it searched so fast. So it couldn’t be the network 's problem.
I updated the server Software version to the latest several dasys ago.

Does any one who know why this happened ?

I have the same problem.

Please restart the server then grab the server logs for me.

Thanks for your reply.
Here is the Logs. please help me analyze what the problem is.
By the way, it the Agents setting page, there is only Plex Movie (Legacy) instead of the Plex Movie agent. Is this normal?

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-02-24_09-08-52.zip (2.5 MB)

After you’ve upgraded to the new agent that page and those settings no longer apply.

The settings for the Plex Movie scanner/agent is located under

3 dots next to the library → Manage Library → Edit → Advanced

Thanks for you reply.
I checked my server, it’s the same, I am using Plex Movie scanner and agent,

So, based on my sever logs, can you find any clue why I can’t get any results when search the metadate?
Or what can I do to help you to annalyze the problem?

Do you have verbose logging enabled in your settings?

I’m not a skilled log reader but there seems to a lot of extra info contained in those logs that I don’t normally see. If you can, disable verbose and switch that to debug logging and get a new set of logs for drzoidberg33 to look at when he comes back

I know you mentioned it but don’t rule out a network issue. In many cases that’s exactly what the problem is when you’re getting no metadata at all for anything you try. Something is blocking it. Are TV shows or other libraries working? It wouldn’t hurt to take a peek at some of your firewall settings

If you only noticed this problem after you updated Plex then you might want to roll back to the last working version and see if the problem goes away

  1. I do turn on the debug logging, so here is the log that I turn off the debug logging below.
Plex Media Server Logs_2023-02-24_14-47-57.zip (2.2 MB)

  2. I didn’t change any of my network configuration, I know I can’t rule out the network’s problem. But what can I do to rule out the network’s problem?
All the matedate, no matter the TV shows or movies, it doesn’t work.

  3. I am using Synology Nas, I tried to roll back the previous version, but the system not allowed my to install the lower version. If I wana try roll out, is it that I can only uninstall and reinstall the plex server?

Leave debug level logging enabled.

Logs are like porridge. Info is too cold. Verbose is too hot. Debug is just right. :girl: :bear: :bear: :bear:

You have to uninstall the current version to roll back to a prior release. This is a Synology requirement.

  1. In Synology Package Center, uninstall Plex Media Center. Choose the Uninstall Only option.
  2. Now install the desired version. Do not roll back further than 1.29.2.6364, the version available via Synology Package Center.
  3. During installation, choose the Install Using Plex Claim Token option. This claims the server as part of the installation process. If successful, you will see a “Plex Media Server successfully claimed by username” message.
  4. After installation, you may see a “503 Server Maintenance” message. This is normal. Plex Media Server is performing database maintenance. Do not interrupt the process. Unless your have a huge database or it is corrupt, the maintenance should take just a few minutes. Check back every five minutes or so. You’ll need to refresh the browser window. It will not update automatically.

Plex is having trouble decoding one of your files. The above messages repeat ~115K times.

There are so many decode errors in the log files that any entries about matching have rolled out.

It appears to be this file: /volumeUSB2/usbshare/02-电视剧/02-国产剧/人民的名义.2017/Season 1/人民的名义-1080p.AAC - S01E54 - 高育良接受审查.mp4

Would this happen to be the show you are having trouble matching? If Google Translate is working correctly, it is In the Name of People.

Matching Problem

To fix matching problems, try aligning the show naming & organization to more closely match the Plex documentation. Then Plex Dance the show after renaming/reorganizing.

Plex DocsYour MediaNaming & Organizing Your TV Show Files

Using In the Name of People as an example:

/volumeUSB2/usbshare/02-电视剧/02-国产剧 <-- Folder added to Plex TV Show library
.../人民的名义 (2017) {tmdb-327209} <-- year in parenthesis. ID tells Plex which show to match.
....../Season 01
........./人民的名义 - S01E54 - 高育良接受审查 [1080p.AAC].mp4 <-- "extra info" in square brackets at end of file name.
  • Given the directory structure in the log files, 02-国产剧 must be the folder added to the TV show library. You cannot add a higher level folder such as 02-电视剧. That is not supported by Plex and will cause matching problems.
  • Plex prefers the date in parenthesis.
  • The TMDB or TVDB ID tells Plex exactly which show to match. The ID must be in curly braces (see documentation).
  • Moving resolution, etc info after sXXeYY means Plex will ignore it when trying to match the show and episodes. Plex ignores everything after sXXeYY and information inside square brackets.

Decoding AAC problem

Let’s get the matching problem fixed first.

Please do the following:

  1. Move the episode to an area not scanned by Plex.
  2. Scan the library to pick up changes.
  3. Empty the library trash.
  4. Go to Settings → Library, and enable Scan my library automatically (adds useful info to log files).
  5. In Package Center, stop / start Plex Media Server.

Hopefully just the one file is causing problems. Moving it will keep it from flooding the log files with error messages. If there are others, they will how up in the log files as well…

Steps 4 & 5 are not required, but they’ll help with any future troubleshooting.

Edit-Library-1

Thanks for your patient reply.
I tried some of the method you mentioned above, and after the NAS rebooting and plex sever rebooting, it seems metadata searching is working now. Just some of movies can’t get the result.
I tried these method below:

  1. Move the decode errors shows
  2. Empty the library trash
  3. I changed the Movie’s scanner setting, I turn off the Use local assets and prefer local metadat, I am not sure if it has some influence.
But overall, the problem seems be solved , and thank you so much for helping me.

Good to hear things are working better.

Regarding matching for movies, check the Plex Documentation for movie naming and follow it as closely as possible. See the movie naming section in Your Media.

You can also add the IMDB or TMDB ID to the movie folder/file names. Like with TV shows, that tells Plex exactly which movie to match.

Prefer Local Metadata applies only to MP4 files. It tells Plex to look at embedded metadata instead of using online sources. If the embedded metadata is incorrect, the movie will probably display incorrectly.

Removing the one file was just to make the log files readable. It did not really solve anything. If the file is truly damaged, you could re-rip/re-transcode it or acquire it from a different source.

Write back if you still have trouble with metadata. Include a set of server log files if possible.
