At home I run 2 Plex media servers - one on a PC and one on a Raspberry Pi.
Recently got a new PC and want to run PMS from it. Since since I am only watching like 4 shows at the moment and know where I am up to I made the decision to just delete PMS off the old PC and install a fresh PMS on the new PC. Thought this would be easier than transferring the server.
I am pretty frustrated that there is no option to create a new server on the new PC. The app requires me to log in before doing anything, and once logged in, it sees the server on the Pi and doesn’t do anything.
I have searched online and apparently there may be an obscure way to get it to run the server setup wizard without logging in. If somebody could point out how that is done, or simply how to setup a PSM on the new PC, I would really appreciate it.
I can’t quite figure out what the problem might be in your situation. Are both servers signed in?
Whenever I install Plex on a new computer (have had it on 3 at once) it just installs and automatically shows up as another server. No sign-in needed when using the local IP, unless I want the PlexPass features available. In the web interface you can then pick whichever server you want to work with, and in the device apps the various libraries can be ordered as needed from any server.
Worst case, I would think you could turn off the Raspberry Pi until you get the PC working like you want, then turn the Pi back on.
Thanks kamhouse, previously, both servers were signed in at the same time and it was easy to switch between them as you mentioned. I guess I made the mistake of deleting the server on my old PC first before installing on the new PC. I have tried disconnecting the Raspberry Pi before installing Plex, but it still knows about that server, it just says that its unavailable.
I’m thinking the worst case is going to be that I have to delete the server on the Raspberry Pi before plex will let me create a new server on the PC. That would be a huge pain. I had a hard time setting up comms between the the server on the Pi and the NAS the first time, I’m not a linux guy, and the setup is not well documented.
Hoping there is a more obvious solution than this.
All I did was download Plex Media Server installer (Windows 10), installed it, then ran Plex Media Server.
The first thing it does is force me to sign in. In the past, it appeared that there was a way to circumvent signing in, and just getting down to setting up a server, e.g. Adding a second media server … by clicking on the “what’s this” text but the text is not there in the current version. Someone in the linked thread said they found a way to get the “what’s this” text back, but left little clues for a normie like me to follow.
Once I sign in, nothing happens, it just shows me the existing server and that’s it - no setup wizard to create a new server.
You’ve likely already tried this, but open a browser on the new PC and attempt to connect to PMS’ local web server directly via: http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
Most advice I’ve seen recommends doing this via whatever private browsing function your browser of choice provides (Incognito, InPrivate, et al…).
Should also be able to right click on the tray icon and select “Open Plex…” to have it open a browser to this address: http://localhost:32400/web/index.html
From there you should be able to see a drop down of any Plex server on the local network. In this case one of my servers is named “Live”.
Thanks man, the thing is, there is no tray icon, I believe because there is no actual serve installed locally on my PC. I DO have the plex media server app installed, but a server hasn’t been set up on the PC yet. I am trying to get to that point.
In both the app, and the web app, I can see my other server located on the Pi - no problems there. I just don’t see a way to create a new server on this PC.
I was about to summon the plex gods old and new, by opening a support ticket, but just realised there is no support channel other than the forum haha
Something must be wrong with your installer file or your copy of Windows, because when I run the Plex Media Server installer it ends with a button that says “Launch” which immediately loads a tray icon before any “setup” procedure is done.
Are you sure you are running the Plex Media Server installer and not the client installer?
I’m about to setup a clean VM and install Plex on a clean system (as opposed to a system that had it on it) to see if there is a difference from my spare test system.
Last night I caved, uninstalled server from RPi, still ran into same problem and then literally 3 minutes later realised I had the client installed, not the server lol. Ah well I’m taking a month of work starting next week, so I will have time to figure out linux commands all over again
