Advice on which MyCloud for server

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I need advice please. I need to buy an external hard drive and would like to run my Plex Server from it rather than needing to run it from a laptop. I’m getting conflicting advice from WD as different support staff recommend different models. I’m sorry but I don’t understand some of the information in the compatibility table. I don’t have a large budget and I think the MyCloud is my best option, could someone please tell me which model would work best. Thank you

I would avoid the my cloud products as they are very poor as a nas device

Try get a synology nas and a cheap 1tb hdd to start with. I can recommend the ds220j which I got for £125 and a 1tb hdd for £35

The difference between my synology and my old my cloud is unbelievable. Mycloud hdd failed and replacing the hdd is very difficult. Trying to get access to the mycloud outside my network was a nightmare and very unreliable. The new myclouds are even worse than the old ones.

If you are going to go with a MyCloud solution, I’d recommend actually getting a PR series NAS or none at all.

Been running my PR4100 with 4x Western Digital 5400 Red (NAS) drives in a RAID-5 setup since 2016. I have Android/XBox/PS4/Windows clients and they all work great, very little CPU/RAM utilization (its hardware accelerated), no issues streaming on my devices outside my network.

The nice thing is when it’s time to upgrade to bigger drives you can basically replace them one by one and once you’ve replaced them all you can expand the overall storage capacity in place to match the new total drive pool size.

The worst issue I’ve had is that during a firmware update it will be a bit wonky (doesn’t reboot on its own) but this has never become a big issue (I just hard power it down after some time and then power back on…it’s upgraded and fine).

I would probably stay away from the EX series (not hardware accelerated) or single drives and just get the PR model that makes sense for you (if it falls into your budget).

Hope that helps.

Thank you, I went out and bought it this morning. Now for the setup - hopefully not too challenging. Thank you

Thank you. I was feeling a bit hesitant about the mycloud and the first piece of advice that came through was to get a Synology so I went and bought it this morning. Reading yours, I like the idea of upgrading the capacity as needed. Very pleased I’m now headed in the right direction. Thank you

You’re welcome

This is pretty useful

If you are setting up Plex on a Synology for the first time, you should read these documents. They will help you avoid several common mistakes, especially if you are new to Synology.

Installation and Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology

Synology Frequently Asked Questions

Suggest you do not install the version of PMS hosted by Synology. It is generally several revisions out of date. Download the file from plex.tv/download and manually install it using the Package Manager. The Installation & Setup guide has instructions for performing a manual installation.

If you purchased a NAS with a Celeron 4xxx processor, note that here is an issue with the Intel video driver affecting hardware accelerated transcoding. See FAQ #26 for instructions on bypassing the faulty driver.
