It’s been an hour, lol
Did you perform the procedure? Why am I locked out of Server Settings and how do I get in? | Plex Support
Tried every link thrown around the giant reddit thread at this point… round robin with the login credentials, preference.xml, starting and restarting the docker, wiping cookies, rinse repeat
No i didn’t.
I only stop and restart the plex server.
I have no experience with Unraid.
I suspect it is using containerization to run Plex, so you need to use something like a “claim token” or tunnel from your web browser inside of the container. But you will get better support if you go here Topics tagged server-unraid and ask how to reclaim the server.
In a incognito browser nothing changes, same as before.
Gave up trying to get it to work on my synology NAS after password change.
I uninstalled Plex on the NAS, deleted all files under PlexMediaServer folder and reinstalled. It now lets me add alibrary and I’ve re-added my media folders and is indexing.
Just thought I’d add that I was having the same issue, until I used the IP Address of the server running Plex, not the host name associated with it.
I had already got as far as editing Preferences.xml before trying this, so it’s possible if I’d followed the instructions to the letter (perhaps it’s be better if they included a note about not using the host’s name) then it might have worked without editing Preferences.xml

It’s already saying
Load the Local Version of Plex Web App
You first need to launch the local version of Plex Web App rather than the hosted version. For instance, if you’re on the computer running the Plex Media Server, you can go to: http://localhost:32400/web or http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
See the related article for details on how to access “locally”.
The linked article says
Local Plex Web App
Your Plex Media Server comes bundled with a local version of the Plex Web App. This allows you to manage your Server and access content even if you don’t have an internet connection available.
You can open Plex Web App in a variety of ways, depending on which platform and computer you’re using.
Accessing Plex Web App Directly in the Browser
On all platforms, you can access Plex Web App on your local network. From any computer on the local network:
http://[Local Plex Media Server IP Address]:32400/web
(e.g. http://192.168.1.25:32400/web) Or locally, from the computer running the server:
http://localhost:32400/web
or
http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
Yes, but the techy in me just automatically replaced the IP address with the host name. I was thinking that they should explicitly state something like ‘do not use the host name of the server’ to make it clear.
Andy
Fair enough. I will ask for a change of the article.
I finally managed to reclaim the server by log in as “offline” from my local network and without my plex login. As soon as I got the plex online account prompt, it wouldn’t work any longer. I was never shown the “claim server” button.
If you have the same problem - logg out of plex.tv and logout on any browser page pointing to your server.
This worked for me on a QNAP:
Logout on plex.tv and log out from http://YOUR-SERVER-IP:32400/web
Stop your server app.
Find your Preferences.xml and delete the following entries:
PlexOnlineHome
PlexOnlineMail
PlexOnlineToken
PlexOnlineUsername
Then (and you can change it back later on) set “allowedNetworks” to your network adress range + subnet.
For example allowedNetworks=“192.168.178.0/255.255.255.0”
Now browse to http://YOUR-SERVER-IP-ADRESS:32400/web
Now you should be prompted to claim your server - ONLY THEN enter your plex account credentials. Everytime I did it before claiming - the server disappeared again.
Maybe it helps.
Yep… SSH tunnel was the trick. Why must these issues arise at 1-2am?! lol
Thanks. It would have saved me half an hour or so of trying to work out why it wasn’t working!

Hi I am T05017,
unfortunately you can only set a limited number of posts per day and then again 24 hours later.
I have found a solution for my ASUSTOR NAS.
Maybe it will work also on other NAS Systems.
- Stop Plex Server on the NAS
- backup the file preferences.xml and then delete it in the Plex directory
- DO NOT delete the Plex directory !
- uninstall Plex Server on the NAS
- reinstall Plex Server on the NAS (it should be started)
- Open the website from the Plex icon on the NAS and login again
- Go through the steps and then at the point of media libraries you should see your previous libraries.
- Reorder the display
- If necessary, set the remote access again, because if a port forwarding was set up, it is no longer correct.
It worked for me and I don’t have to re-import anything and all the movies etc
All already seen movies / series were marked accordingly.
I’m having the same issue with Ubuntu. Changed password and signed out of all devices and now I can’t seem to reach my local IP for Plex that I’ve used for years.
I get 192.168.1.7 unexpectedly closed the connection. with Chrome.
I’ve gone through all the links in this post, checked my Preferences.xml which already showed wiped and not stored values. I’ve rebooted my plex server entirely and still no luck. Local network is in allowednetworks
EDIT: Tried it from 3 different computers, even after trying incognito and wiping all site data, only one was able to connect and claim the server. Very weird, but I’m up and running.
Your server reclamation process is ■■■■■■■ ■■■■. You literally recommend third party tools just to fix how ridiculous it is to reclaim a server. Thanks for wasting my ■■■■■■■ morning.
i have same problem with image docker linuxserver/plex, when i changed my password i loose my library i can’t showing these yet i don’t changed my config
Thanks for the help, managed to get my Shield up and running again. Had to move the server from the shield to my external drive so i can edit the Preferences folder. After that do make sure you stop the server under settings, Plex media server. After that was able to claim my server back. Small headache in the morning but all good.
Dont forget to move your server back to the shield!!!
(Plex running on QNAP as app not container)
This worked for me - Thank you. The only item I would add is to re-start your server after you’ve changed the Preferences.xml file.
For what it’s worth, I tried following these (similar) instructions multiple times along with a ton of other fixes and it was only when I realised that the permissions matter.
The previous times I renamed the original Preferences.xml file and created a new file from a copy with the above points. This time, I edited the original file and that worked.
