After Plex for Mac install, Plex isn't reading any new files

Server Version#: 1.5.0.951 (Plex for Mac)
Player Version#: 1.9.4.4325 (Plex Media Server)

I installed Plex for Mac a few days ago. I had previously just used the Plex Media Server. Since the new install, Plex doesn’t recognize any new movie files I add to my external hard drive. All of my previous movies are on there, and they work fine, but anything new doesn’t show up.

Any suggestions?

Plex for Mac is just a player and will not affect the server scanning files.

Version 1.9.4 of the server is extremely old. What version of MacOS does your mac run? is it too old to run the current version of server?

I tried downloading the newest plex, but everytime I do it says the current version is 1.9.4.4325.

I realize Plex for Mac is only a player, but the problems starting happening once I installed it.

Also I have tried to create a new library, but nothing shows up in that folder. And when I delete the new folder, it disappears then reappears.

are you using the local server interface that came with your old version of server IP:32400/web or are you trying to use Plex for Mac to manage the server?

You server version is so old the auto update will not work. you can download whatever is newest from our website downloads page. but before you do that make sure whatever version of MacOS you have is compatible with the current version of server before overwriting what you have.

I have both still installed. And both are not updating my files.

I downloaded the newest version of the server from the plex downloads page. When I install it it gives me a new name like Plex Media Server 5. I open it and it still says it the old version.

MacOS adds a number at the end when there is already a file of the same name in the folder that you open the zip file. or when you copy it to a folder it should ask it you want to "Keep both, stop or replace. if you choose keep both then it will add the number to the copy. It could also be a hidden file.

What version of MacOS is on your mac?

I am using MacOS 10.15.2.

I tried creating a new library “Movies2”. I added a file to that folder on my external, and again nothing happened. I then tried to delete “Movies2” but every time it gets deleted, the “Movies2” folder reappears.

Everything was working fine last week, so I am confused as to why nothing is working now.

Also thanks for the replies, and the help.

Is there more than one user account on this computer? Do you see the Plex Media Server folder in your library folder? https://support.plex.tv/articles/202915258-where-is-the-plex-media-server-data-directory-located/

No. I’m the only user.

Yes. I see the Plex Media Server folder in my library folder.

hmm. I wonder what that .lock file is for Application support folder.

Just to be sure. you are running the Plex Media Server.app from your applications folder correct? (not from the downloads folder or someplace else) And sorry if a silly question but have you restarted the computer since you have tried to update PMS?

have you checked your application folder for hidden files? cmd+shift+. with finder open will show them if there.

and is it possible to see your PMS logs after it starts up. you can get a zip file from the troubleshooting area of PMS settings

“Application Support\showtimeRD92fi3u.lock” is the full .lock name. No idea what it is.

Yes I am running from my Applications folder.

I was pretty sure I restarted my computer but I did it again, and nothing has changed.

Hidden files didn’t show anything out of the ordinary.

I downloaded my log files. Should I post them here? It’s quite long.

remembered that you have to allow apps in Catelina to read external drives. did you allow Plex to?

I’m still trying to think of why it is not overwriting the one you have in applications folder with a new one. have you tried removing the #5 in the app name?

This may help.

How do I allow Plex to read external drives? It read it last week so I don’t know why it isn’t now.

I was also wondering why it’s not overwriting. Currently I have three different PMSs but none of them can access external.Screen Shot 2020-01-23 at 10.11.55 PM

This is what it looks like. Do I need to uncheck “Downloads Folder”?

No not at all, you have it correct

When you view the Applications folder in column view do all of them say 1.9.4? are any of them 1.18.5?

also when you open the zip file you download are you opening it in the applications folder or opening it in downloads then dragging the app to Applications?
