Albums appearing with incorrect artist and unable to change it

Server Version#:1.22.3.4392
Player Version#:4.54.5
Hi
a number of my album seemingly randomly appear under the wrong artist. Randomly because if I look at the tags then there is no reference to the incorrect artist although often the slbums from the same artist appear under the same incorrect one… Even stranger, if I try to change the artist in plex then the change gets accepted and reversed after a few minutes with the album again appearing with the same incorrect artist or I get a message straight away that the change could not be saved.

Very likely it has to do with a conflict between an album’s “AlbumArtist” and the location of this album’s files in the folder structure, which must be in sync with the AlbumArtist.
See: New to plex. Help with music library - #6 by OttoKerner

That is what I thought. Only Artist and Album Artist are both the same and they are indeed in sync with the folder structure. I set eg “Joseph Haydn” as composer, artist and album artist while plex insists on “Alison Balsom”. Folder structure is /home/user/Music/artist/album/. The only connection between the artist in the id3 tag and the one Plex insists on is that the latter is indeed the album artist of a different album that includes tracks composed by the former. The two are otherwise totally unconnected.
And when I change the artist I get “could not save changes”.

Did you tell Plex to prefer your embedded meta tags? Otherwise it will prefer the metadata from Musicbrainz.org, where this album may have a different album artist.
Did you write musicbrainz ID tags into your files? If you want this album to appear with metadata, which are deviating from musicbrainz, you might want to remove these musicbrainz IDs again.

Yep, I did. And as I said removing the wrong tags does not work, plex says changes could not be saved. This is when I change the album artist; when I change only the artist for an individual file it creates a new album with that new artist but the original wrong album artist.
Important to stress: it only appears to some artists, the vast majority behaves correctly.

What is also odd is that in the settings for the album the first item is “Artist” when actually I suppose it should be “Album artist”. while in the settings for individual files it is “Album artist” with “Artist” being empty:

Does this procedure have any effect? (Wait a few minutes before assessment and pressing the ‘Edit’ button!)

Plex Dance “light” (step 4 can be omitted)

Have you verified that all tracks of an album are tagged with identical AlbumArtist and that every track also has a “track number” in its meta tags?

That seems to have done it. Oddly it looks like the database scan alone did it as another album did not even need to be removed. Any idea why there might have been a “lock” on the album artist tag?
Thanks a lot!

Sorry, no. I can only assume that the server might still have been busy with library scans or metadata downloads and the like, so it didn’t update the library view immediately.
Particularly with a newly created library or after adding or removing lots of items, give the server plenty of time to update all aspects of its database.
It can also help to manually trigger a database optimization after extensive operations.

thanks again!

Same issue here!
An album added to the library is showing with album artist “Various Artists” and Plex is not allowing me to change that (version 1.23.2.4656).

I already checked the folder structure as well as the agents, all fine.
File structure: the files are under the respective album and under the respective correct (album) artist.
Agents: First position for all agents is “Local Media Assets”.

I’d be very grateful for any hint to solve this issue!

I wouldn’t be able to tell you whether that is the case, since I don’t know what you consider as “fine”.

Are there other albums inside the same AlbumArtist folder, which have either

  • no AlbumArtist meta tags at all
  • have different/differing content in their AlbumArtist meta tags

If the metadata agent for your music library is “Plex Music” , the settings under “Agents” are irrelevant.

Many thanks for the reply!
… and apologies for my somewhat lame reaction.

The issue was solved through an update of Plex Server, so for now no further hiccups. :upside_down_face:
