Announcement: State of EPG & TV metadata in Plex

Last update completely screwed my Hauppage tuner, rolled back.

Will there be a Plex EPG provider in Australia and New Zealand? As it was left for Downunder to use a recommended paid service or find a alternative xmltv source of our own choicing.

if the new provider is actually the old provider, you have a fighting chance. Fingers crossed. I wonder when they can announce who the new provider is.

Will the new provider be able to provide an EPG for UK users who have to use an eyetv-netstream-4sat, which is a satellite tuner?

If it’s the old provider then the guide data was so useless (at least in NZ) then it wouldn’t even be worth bringing back.

Sourcing quality guide data in both NZ and AU has always been frustratingly difficult. I’ve never understood the often adversarial tactics that broadcasters in those countries have taken to manipulate guide data to the detriment of DVR users.

Someone else who is using EPG123? All my channels are empty today… ?

I would like to chime in here and say, Thank you Plex dev’s for admitting this and moving forward on what I suspect will be a completely revamped DVR!

If you don’t mind, I would like to ask for a couple of basic workflows.

  1. Manual recording.
  2. A total revamp on DVR scheduling recordings and managing recordings. Something like a Calendar to easily see the Dates, Program, Channel name, etc. Adjusting recording priority and deleting schedules should be selectable of multiple items perhaps with a simple calendar layout without dragging through outdated numerous past recording to the top of the current ā€˜Recording priority’ panel.
  3. To be able to ā€˜clip out’ a clip to export a short part of a show to HEVC or mp4 file for export.

Thank you Plex and a special shoutout to @sa2000 He is the best!

PS: Have a look at the outdated Elgato EyeTV Smart guides. It was a powerful and effective DVR way back then. Simple Calendar layout with right click dropdown menus.

Fantastic 3 suggestions there, @Jase - would be fantastic if they could be provided. I would value them much more highly than some of the other recent feature additions.

All good suggestions @Jase, so here’s a little feedback on those items…

  1. Manual recording - Currently being worked
  2. New Schedule & Priority UX - Currently being worked
  3. Clip Export - This has been discussed in the past but is not currently being worked

Any dates yet?

That’s fantastic news!

This makes sense as it can easily be done outside Plex with freely available software.

What about being able to record a movie that has a, say, 10 minute News break in the middle?

That scenario is exclusive to TiVo and our request to change the way they were handling that was denied. It should not be an issue once we move back to Gracenote, as it was not an issue before.

All of this is interesting stuff. I hope you can share a release date with us soon.

One further ask, not related to the guide but to recording in general is to have the ability to wake up and send to sleep a recording computer. No other software I know of requires a PC to be manually kept awake to start and complete a recording. It should be a given that the software does this for you. Not particularly energy efficient if you have intermittent recordings over a number of hours but can’t allow the computer to go to sleep in between. Been covered in another thread but hasn’t been picked up by Plex in the time that I’ve been watching it.

Doesn’t the computer need to be awake anyway incase someone wants to play something? Please excuse my ignorance here, my server is on a NAS.

Yes but I only use plex for recording films so generally, it is just a recording machine that I’d wake up if I wanted to watch something, which isn’t that often.

Good news, thank you, sir.
Any thoughts on ā€œkeywordā€ recording - enabling users not to define only TV shows to record, but anything that has certain keyword in its title or description, etc?
This would survive EPG changes, EPG provider changes…

Too little too late for me. Ignored forum posts about crashes. Phantom missing recordings without a trace of info. Disregarding user settings about disabling epg refresh. Tired of it all.

Thanks for letting us know what’s going on. But please, no new features. Fix the current problems first to get a stable, usable product. No need to create more problems until the current issues are resolved.
