Announcement: State of EPG & TV metadata in Plex

+1 for the elgato DVR - they had a really good way to search for shows. Being able to set a record for programmes which contained user defined terms (in either the title or the programme text) was really good.

Any timescale yet - is it likely to be weeks or months? One well crafted announcement and nothing else so far, meanwhile the EPG guide lurches from issue to issue.

I like to think the fix is imminent and even with 30 days passing since this announcement it would have been realistic to expect it already as surely having previously used this provider plex will still have the code for how it used to be
? Not going to hold my breathe, you still haven’t fixed the tidal search iss up
 yawns

I think this is very unlikely.

@cire12 did write that the ink on the contract was still wet and specifically wrote that it was premature to provide any estimates.

I think it’s great that he/she informed us, but we have to be fair; it was very advanced notice and I appreciate that we were told at all.

Plex has developed since then with several major revisions so I doubt they can just plug the old code back in. They will want to get it right this time

They had it right last time, unfortunately the motives surround entirely money and not actually wanting to put a good product out, the main competitor is literally miles ahead with tv/dvr functionality and I think paying users need to be afforded the decency of eta so there is some kind of accountability

For those of you that didn’t see this comment in the other thread
we’re not just returning to the code we had before.

I assume your not using their api due to cost, is it safe to asse the current horrendously slow refresh times will continue?

Does this mean that the current EPG data for episodic information is going to be fixed? For instance, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is currently airing Season 6. But the Plex guide is still reporting that Season 5 episodes are airing nightly, even though the episodes are listed as ‘new’. This is really screwing up my recordings because I still have some of those ‘same’ season 5 episodes in my library from a few weeks ago, and thus Plex is not recording because it thinks I already have the episode in my library.

This actually brings up the most annoying and really asinine thing about Plex DVR: even though I have this show and others set to record both new and repeat airings, Plex thinks it is smarter than I am and won’t record what it believes to be redundant programming. Well goddammit, if that is the case, then give me another option to tell Plex to be truly stupid and just record the f’n program that I tell it to record no matter what! I don’t care if that means my library will be filled with 100 copies of what it thinks is the same episode – just do what I tell it to do!!! As it is, there is no possible way to simply force a recording in this situation, beyond deleting or moving the recording that is already in the library.

If it helps, there is a way around this (I use it quite a lot). Simply record to a new library which does not already contain the show you want. It will not associate copies from other libraries with the library you are recording into.

Thanks for the suggestion, and yes, that is actually what I did tonight. But I have missed the past few nights because I wasn’t aware or anticipating the EPG to be so out of sync. Having the ability to be able to tell Plex to “just be stupid and record the program no matter what” would absolve having to manually check up and worry about this.

After all, a workaround can only be a workaround if you know what the issue is to begin with. Since I don’t have time to watch this program every night, I sometimes can go a few days before catching that Plex missed a recording. And when I finally decided to get to the bottom of why this has been happening so frequently lately, that itself took quite a bit of time (no relevant messages were to be found in the logs). So the frustration still lingers.

I’m guessing this is still a long time coming
In the meantime, what’s everyone doing to circumvent the lack of solid EPG data? Are you guys using XMLTV info? Just dealing with the crappy EPG data? Just curious as I’m trying to set up some new seasons to record and I’m getting frustrated already.

yes, for about a year now.

At present it’s the only way to go, It been more than 12 months for me

I wonder if we’re now using the new EPG provider in some areas?

Looks like after PMS refreshed during the maintenance window last night, some of my line-up that has been messed up for 12months~ is now fixed.

With the old EPG, there were about 8 premium channels mislabeled or not available to map at all, (Showtime in Black was DRM protected in reality/hdhomerun GUI, but was showing up as Showtime Showcase through PMS GUI etc
and I could never tune to it etc
) That all now seems to be fixed, I am now able to map my missing channels, and the mislabeled ones our now correct.

What has everyone found is best for XMLTV? I’ve been using best.epg and am running in to some serious issues lately.

That’s awesome that some of the things got fixed. I feel like Plex would have made an announcement? Are you on a beta version of the server?

Not that I’m aware of, but I’m very happy I have a few more channels to record off of of now

If you don’t mind me asking, what are you using?

The source is schedulesdirect and I use MC2XML to convert the data into XML. There are other apps to doing this, but I am on a Mac and MC2XML works well for me. It’s set to run daily on a schedule so there is nothing I need to do.

I know it would just be conjecture at this point
but do we have an idea or even extremely rough estimate as to when this will be rolled out or in beta?
