Announcement: State of EPG & TV metadata in Plex

This is the only communication I am aware of:

I asked @Elan about this back in Aug last year. This was his reply. I had 3 follow-up questions for him and chased him for an answer here , here and here .

Basically, he ghosted us which did not come across well at the time.

Well, the first step to ANY ā€œproblemā€ is to actually admit that there was a problem… and there is. Thank goodness you all over there have seen, heard, and dealt with the same issues we all have gone through, but to us, that’s still more reason for us to be angry because while we can accept some failures, this still shouldn’t be an excuse. Let’s take our money out of the equation for a sec. We aren’t in the driver seat here. You guys as developers and whoever else in the board room is. We don’t have a huge amount of options for low cost and expansive DVR and TV options like Plex can provide but we aren’t building out the infrastructure. Your teams are. Why does it take more than a year for anyone to be upfront and direct. We don’t want lip service anymore. We want to know the facts, why something can’t happen, and if there is a way in the future, then continue to work on that endeavor. We aren’t the marketing team. As slick worded as your marketing team is, they really suck at making sure that your product/service is solid. Again, we’re not the ones trying to kill you over it… you guys in Plex land are killing the Plex product yourselves.

As someone who has had some (minor) issues with the EPG data over the last year or so, I wanted to say thanks for taking steps to remedy the problem. Also thanks to @sa2000 for working so diligently to help with reported issues; it seems like it was often tedious, thankless work.

We aren’t there yet. We still don’t know when the actual changes are going to happen.

Now that the existing provider knows they are being dumped they aren’t going to have any reason to ensure any of the data is accurate and I can imagine it might even get worse for a while.

Lets hope it isn’t too long!!!

They’re (Tivo EPG provider) obligated under contract to continue to provide the services they are contracted for, until termination of said contract. Failure to do so could lead to litigation. Their failure to provide services that meet the expectations of what was laid out upon first contract signing, is likely the escape clause that Plex is using to now sign with a new provider. Until that transition is complete, they’re still on the hook.

Thanks so much! Very excited for this! There’s a few non-DRM premium channels that are incorrect in PLEX, but correct in HDHomerun. Would be great to finally have these added to my PLEX DVR lineup.

Glad to see there is a possible fix coming down the pipe… Just Started to use plex again and tried to watch the game via live tv and wasn’t working. Couldnt get any channel to tune. Tried everything i could think of to fix it and couldn’t figure it out so went back to emby for live tv. Then I saw this message. Hopefully, it’ll be fixed soon as I already have plex pass!

You certainly shouldn’t have received a failure to tune regardless of some of the struggles we’ve encountered on the EPG front. If you wouldn’t mind taking a moment to shoot some logs over we’d love to take a look.

Are you on 1.20.1?

A number off people are reporting similar issues with Live TV and DVR with that release. Their solution has been to revert to 1.20.0

J.

I try to tune to my channels, and it said I could not tune. I tried to delete my DVR and re-add it, but when it asked for my postal code, it won’t go any further. I downloaded an XML guide and uploaded it manually. I’m able to do that but not watch any channels. I have tried the latest version, 1.20.1.3252, and the last two versions I have before that, 1.20.0.3181 and 1.19.4.2935. I thought it was my tuner or antenna, but I can watch tv live with Emby. I’m running Plex on my Synology NAS. Sending some logs attached.Plex Media Server.1.log (10.0 MB) Plex Tuner Service.log (2.2 KB) Plex Media Server.log (218.1 KB)

I believe i have tried 1.20.0.3181. I will try once again just to verify.

Well, looking at it this morning… Im able to tune to my channels… That is completely strange… I didn’t change anything in the past 12 hours and it just started working. Let me know if there is anything weird in the logs I guess lol

Are you in the UK? If so, did you just type on the 1st bit eg: OX28?

No, I am in the US. Tried 3 different zip codes and no joy.

I updated to the new version 1.20.1.3252 two weeks ago and have not been able to tune to a channel on live tv dvr since. I have multiple roku and fire devices and am unable to tune on any of them. I have a Happauge dual hd tuner and am able to watch tv through the win tv client on the server pc. Everything worked fine before the last update.

Glad to hear!!! Live TV with DVR was good at my previous residence then I moved to a new state and it was painful to get my HDHomerun even working with Comcast now I have it fully working and the guide is so Bad I am missing most of my Channels and EPG data. i would just use Xfinity Stream until this issue gets fixed but Their Service keeps dropping channels at Random for no explicable reason and have to call or chat to fix which is terrible. I really hope this issue get resolved soon so I can go back to Plex Full time. Thanks for the update.

The logs you provided show all external requests from the server timing out - so some network / routing configuration issue on the NAS.

This is just one example of a timeout

Would need server logs zip (with debug logging enabled) to investigate. I see that you have posted in a number of forum threads about this but I cannot see any logs attached - could you ensure debug logging enabled - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

and then after restarting Plex Media Server, do a test and then capture server logs after that and attach your logs zip to a post in one of the various topics you posted in. Please provide a link here to the post containing the diagnostics. Please do test using the Plex roku app and also the Android device and give details of channel number / times of the tests

thank you

See this article for getting server logs zip

Wow… I’m such an idiot… I know what was wrong and I changed it… Sorry for wasting your time on my stupid error! I had changed something with my DNS a while back to try something new and I never ended up using it. I changed my DNS back to what it should be and the zip code worked great.

Any date planned yet? I sincerely hope this isn’t simply an appeasing announcement that won’t actually happen for months.
