Any way to set default poster for unmatched content?

It would be nice to have some classy default poster for all the content that are unmatched or missing poster for other reasons. The frame grabs are bit crappy (at least in my libraries) and since I have lots of movies that I cannot find posters at all, the ui looks ugly.

Maybe I could write a script that watches my folders for movie files and creates identically named symlink to local jpeg for every new file and try to get the local agent use that?
But I do think this is something that plex server should handle by itself. Shouldn’t be too hard to implement either.

Consider this: The below is normally a situation you want to avoid, but maybe this behaviour is of use to you.

If you put a folder.jpg or poster.jpg into the top folder of your library, plex will attempt to use it for all movies and shows which are in subfolders ā€œbelowā€ it.

You then also have to make sure that the ā€˜Local Media Assets’ agent is not in the topmost position under Agents, or this default picture will override the posters of items for which a poster can be found online:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ā€˜Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Good workaround Otto, but avoiding the situation with correct Naming and Folder structure goes a long way towards it not happening. I have only come across a few very early cartoons that can be difficult. Then again I could imagine there are some hidden troublesome titles in the wild.

Not sure hat you mean by that. There are a lot of videos imaginable which just cannot be matched. Sports, fitness, instructions, lessons, pr0n…

This is a better workaround than my idea. I have not been able to make it work yet though.
I have set the image and the agents and re-scanned and refetched the library but the old frame grabs still show up. Hopefully it will somehow find my poster.jpg at some point when the scans reach the end.

Plex Dance one of the movies. This will let you know if it works for new content, for which posters have yet to be generated.

Thanks for the tip. Dance did not help though (except that the new frame grab for my guinea pig movie is less uglier mess

I use Filebot:
https://www.filebot.net/

I know BEFORE it even hits the library if it’s gonna match or not - that gives me time to prepare some ā€˜material’ and change to ā€˜Personal Media’ right out of the gate.

There are no ā€˜blank posters’ (for long) at my house, and if I see one, I know what team of ā€˜problem solvers’ to send in…lol
