Server Version#: 1.18.9.2578
Player Version#: 2.16
I’m currently running an Apple TV 4th generation (non 4K). The one thing I noticed immediately is that the UI seems laggy now but more-so above that it seems that with the enhanced video player enabled there is a frame rate drop on every kind of content played for about 10-20 seconds every few minutes. At first I thought it was an issue with the file but I’m direct playing 1080, 720 and 480SD content and it doesn’t matter what it is. This has been confirmed by another user on reddit as well.
I checked the logs but I don’t see any obvious issue
Do you have “Match Content Frame Rate” enabled in the tvOS settings?
Also in the app settings you can enable Show Enhanced Video Player Debug Overlay, it will show an overlay with tech info on top of the video player, with some relevant data like the number of dropped frames.
Could you enable that and keep an eye to the number of dropped frames? In theory, when the problem you describe occurs, that number should be increased.
Could you take a photo of the screen when that happens and share it with me? (Important: cut out the first line in the overlay with the file URL from your photo, since it contains the token to access your server)
I’m having the same issue on my Apple TV and I saw this in your last post:
I actually tried this last night and the video quality improved but the audio was out of sync when this setting was enabled on my Apple TV. I wanted to share this in case it would help lead to a fix.
Two things I’ve found - disabling enhanced video player and setting multi-channel audio boost to “None” has made my Plex content play normally again. Although, I have been using the enhanced video option since it first came out but these issues with the choppy/stuttering playback and lag in the Plex menus seems to have come around in the more recent round of Plex client updates. I don’t see this problem on my Roku or Firestick players so this seems to be specific to 4th gen (non 4k) Apple TV’s.
Thanks @dzawadzki but that sounds like a different issue (that I’m also interested in fixing, but I can’t reproduce either). You can try this and see if it helps: Lip sync issues. Again... still
Having enabled the debug overlay it doesn’t appear to show any frames dropping during playback. The 7 dropped frames present were immediate after hitting play. This photo was taken after about 5-10 seconds of the stuttering. Other info, I do not have “Match Frame Rate” enabled on the tvOS settings.
I can confirm that if I do enable the match frame rate it does fix the issue but does create an audio delay.
Have this issue too. Nothing wrong with the files but the framerate drops to like half. Gets really choppy and slow.
Funny enough, Infuse also have similar issues but rather stutters hard instead of playing right.
Maybe its server related somehow? Seems so weird.
It’s almost like the bursts of data for the buffer is out of sync or something.
This would be on an Apple TV 4K.
With the Plex app with the mpv based player it goes to half framerate and back to normal and slows down again.
With infuse it stutters back and forth, plays a split sec, goes back to where it was then skips past that half sec and repeat.
Weird that both players would see issues like this on the same time.
Going to update my plex server now to see if it changes anything.
Currently on 1.18.9.2571-e106a8a91 for Synology.
All of this does not seem to relate at all to drive read speeds or network issues. This prob comes down to the server since both players are having issues the same week. (unless both players updated at the same time)
Thank you for the advice. I turned off the enhanced video player and made sure the multi-channel audio boost was also off. This fixed the frame-dropping issues (which was so annoying) and the audio is staying in sync.
Had the same issue and turning off enhanced player on apple tv seemed to get it back to normal. Big ups on this thread as it was hard to find/isolate issue.
Could we expect a fix for this with whenever 2.17 is released? Hopefully it will fix the enhanced video player issue and is released sooner than later due to the fact that without it the Apple TV now has to transcode DTS audio to AC3.
Same issue. Before finding this thread I had tried the match frame rate, it seemed to provide an overly distracting smooth effect and the audio wasn’t always synced. Disabling the enhanced player seems to have fixed it but now movies seem to be pausing randomly, and sometimes buffer indefinitely when you start them and require going back and then starting again. I had been pretty bug free for the last 3 years :s
Running on a Mac Mini with 4th gen apple tvs (non 4K) All 3 of our Apple TV’s are doing this.
Just to add a me too on this issue. I’m seeing it here too with the enhanced player (which has been perfect until recently). I put up the info overlay but it wasn’t reporting dropped frames - but from visual inspection it was
Please say oh Plex Ninjas if there is any other information we can provide. I’m using an AppleTV 4 and macOS on ther server with the latest betas of everything.
Curiously on the latest beta of the ios version on an iPad Pro using the enhanced player I’m not seeing the issue.
