BUG: Naming in Plex is still in the 1980's, why doesn't it respect non-us letters?

In the nordic countries (as well as a LOT of other countries around the world) there are a few more letters than the standard US ones.
In 1992 (almost 30!!! years ago) a little thing called UTF-8 was created.
Most systems have for the last 20 years been able to handle the extra letters without any sweat.
But not plex.
Plex embarrasingly renames the danish letter ‘Ø’ to ‘0’ (zero).
So the danish capital København is named K0benhavn.
The football team in Copenhagen, is not called F.C. København, but F.C. K0benhavn, making it IMPOSSIBLE to search in the tv guide for it.

Or a danish title for the great 1968 movie ‘Where eagles dare’, in danish called ‘Ørneborgen’ is named ‘0rneborgen’.

This has been cludged around in the system, so if you search for Ørneborgen, it will actually find it, so instead of fixing the problem, Plex programmers have just propagated the problem with replacing the Ø around the system.
Problem is that when you then sort it, Ø is the second last letter in the danish alphabet, and where do Plex place it? At the very top of the list, because it starts with a zero???
I mean, really?

Plex is 20 years behind on this, there is no problems in filesystems with Æ, Ø or Å any more.

Most danish people know there is a world beyond the borders, maybe americans should realize that as well, and the programmers should respect the extra characters, and really DO something about it?

What’s extra weird, is that when you then change the sort manually to use ‘Ø’, the library list suddenly shows an Ø below the Z.
It doesn’t show any titles mind you, but something in Plex is aware of the extra letters.

Yes, the titles disappear from the library list, titles stop at ‘Z’ and it doesn’t show anything starting with Ø, even though if you search for it, it will appear in the results.

I know the tone in this post is angry, and if you are offended, too bad, this is offensive for all danes, and this is a culture that is first and foremost honest and direct.

Where exactly are you getting this?
I’m getting my Umlauts and Accents just fine if I add content to my library – same for online media sources etc. Linux lets me even use lots of punctuation in file names on my ext4 file system (files shared from a NAS via SMB can be a bit trickier though)

I’m with tom80H. I have no issues with UTF-8 characters displaying properly and never have.

You’ve got a code page or something misconfigured someplace in your system. PLEX handles these characters without issues.

P.S. in edit - Forgot to add, you’re correct about this being a kick-ass movie, tho.

This isn’t the filesystem, it’s the sort name inside Plex that does this, so nothing to do with the filesystem. And yes, the movie is great :smiley:

If I may add here?

Make certain the system locale is set and the locale files are created

If you are setting for German (de_DE)

Generate locale

sudo locale-gen de_DE.UTF-8

Set locale, this generates also the /etc/default/locale file.

sudo update-locale LANG=de_DE.UTF-8

Then restart the system

And why the german?

System locale is going to impact:

  1. How Plex sorts
  2. How Plex displays
  3. How Plex converts characters for storage in the database.

So if you are in sweden, it will not sort danish, and if I’m in Denmark it will not sort German? Sounds like there is a systemic problem

I’ve added the danish locale, no change.

I take it this will apply for future changes in your server – right now you only changed that system parameter in your OS. Keep an eye on that lock… even if you refresh all your library items, your unwanted 0rneborgen won’t go away as it’s currently locked.

The lock is removed of course, I’ve also tried removing the match, and rematch it, nothing changes, Plex insists on adding a ‘0’ instead of ‘Ø’ in the sort order.

Has Plex been restarted and the media file Plex Dance so it finds it again by proper title?

I also wonder about the Library default language.

I know there are a lot of language settings to flip around which are automatically preset when locale is set at the onset.

Library language is Danish (has always been that).
I haven’t done your ‘plex dance’, I will do as well, just keeping the run-around going.
‘Empty trash’??? Where do I do that?
EDIT: ok, found that, the next one, clean bundles???

Yup, Tommy might have some input, I’ve talked to him about this years ago, but haven’t seen any changes.

Done with the dance, no change. Sorting is still 0rneborgen, rest of the metadata is fine.

Now, When you use the different apps, do they respect sorting or is it at the server level ?

This is a dedicated plex server (ubuntu).
Most movies are stored with their original title, so I don’t have any folders with ø or Ø in them, but I just tried creating a few folder, and that is sorted correctly

Sadly, all my libraries, UI’s and media naming is in english only, so no valid imput here, except you of all people should know better than to expect Danish to work all over the plate, not only in Plex Universe, but also elsewhere, Frisbee :wink:

When said, the only thing where I go with Danish, are for subs, and there I had to develop SRT2UTF-8 :smiley:
