[BUG] Notification on Shield TV home screen about Plex content still playing after play is complete

OK, thanks for the precision. Any idea when this update will be out of beta and available to everyone ?

Not an exact date, but probably 10-14 days?

Alright, I’ll wait until this new version is no longer in beta and is available to everyone.

That’s good to know. I’m sure you get many bug reports, and I like to think I’m patient enough for things to work their way up the priority list, but a year seems excessive, especially when I’ve seen lots of other fairly obscure bugs get fixed across many beta releases. Perhaps the biggest frustration is not having any idea whether something has even been seen and is on a list somewhere. In this case, it feels like it would never have gotten attention had someone not reached out directly to BigWheel.

Well, after a couple of weeks of this working OK, the notifications are back. After the fix that came in 8.16.0.24021-beta, the post-play screen correctly appeared after a movie played to the end, and there was no ā€˜still playing’ notification after quitting the Plex app. But now that notification is showing up again. Plex devs, please see what changed since 8.16.0.24021-beta that caused this problem to reappear. It’s happening on both of my Shield TV boxes.

Are you able to reproduce and provide some logs from the android client, please?

Can confirm it does it here as well. (v 8.16.0.24371)

Tried a Movie and a TV episode (last one of a show, so no continue to next episode)

Seems pretty easy to replicate, so not sure why you would need logs.

Play something, through to the end.
exit Plex app
Notification appears.

This.

This is extremely easy to reproduce.

  1. Watch something, anything and let it complete.
  2. Once finished use the back button on the shield remote to back track all the way out of the plex app to the shield home screen. This leaves the plex app running the background.
  3. Once you get there you will see a notification saying the last played item is still playing.

I’ve recently moved to a shield from roku about a month ago and this has been happening every since I started using plex on the shield. If I had to guess I’d say whatever code the notification uses to detect the viewing status does not have the most up to date information and still thinks its in progress when its actually already completed.

Easy workaround is to double press the home button on the shield remote and then kill the plex app. Once killed the notification is removed.

Sometimes, there are different things that can cause similar symptoms. When fixing this internally, we found a few ways this could happen. So either something has regressed in the latest beta, or there is another cause, which is why logs are helpfulšŸ™‚

I’ll get the client logs tonight and pass them on.

Having sat down at my desk this morning, it looks as if the fixes for that were reverted I’m afraid, due to introducing an issue with Android Auto. We’ll make sure all is working well for the next release :crossed_fingers:
Apologies for the mix up.

Thanks for taking a look and confirming the regression. I’ll hold off on sending logs for now, in favor of waiting for the next fix. Much appreciated!

Thinking this might be fixed. An update to the Android TV app arrived today and so far I’ve not seen this notification after finishing an episode.

nope, not fixed here, just tried a Movie and still shows as playing on the shield homescreen (8.16.0.24423)

There maybe a possibility it does not happen with TV unless it is the last episode (so there is no auto play of next episode)

Confirmed here also, still a problem in Plex for Android 8.16.0.24423. It’s odd that I never saw a forum post for this as a beta release, so is it this non-beta release: Plex for Android - #383 by marekszulik?

As I mentioned, we had to revert the fix for this, unfortunately, as it caused some issues with Android Auto that caused Google Play to block the release. We’ll have the fix in for 8.17

Thanks. I figured it was still to come, but someone else thought it had been fixed in the final 8.16 release, hence the additional thread comments.

I always run beta releases, and I assume the fix will appear in a 8.17 beta release first. Will definitely be looking for it.

Although no mention of it in the release notes, this appears to be [re-]fixed in Plex for Android 8.17.0.24676-beta.

Yeah, I’ve prodded to get it added to the release notes again
