Server Version#: 1.32.5.7328
Player Version#: 9.27.0.2856
I’ve noticed that this is broken on Android TV (using an nVidia Shield tube), but that it does work on Roku.
So let’s say you have a movie split into multiple parts and have them named something like:
Movie Title 2023 (Part 1).mkv
Movie Title 2023 (Part 2).mkv
Movie Title 2023 (Part 3).mkv
During playback, it correctly plays through the files in sequence and even recognizes the cumulative run time. But if I get to the 2nd or 3rd file (my Shield correctly recognizes that it’s playing “Part 2 of 3” or “Part 3 of 3”) and then scrub through the movie, the previews which come on-screen are always for the first file.
On Roku, the movie doesn’t present multiple parts, it just plays back as if all the files were contiguous and the previews are accurate.
So this feels like it’s an implementation problem between the server and the Android TV player reading the video files independently of each other, even though they correctly match as a single movie.
Except that it does. But let’s not belabor the naming convention part of it because it’s not the point of what I’m reporting. Regardless of how I’ve managed to get multi-part playback working, the problam is that on Android TV, when playback moves into the 2nd file or beyond, the previews will only show for the first video file.
No. I am reporting buggy behavior. As in, if you scan in a multi-part title, playback on an Android TV device will only show preview thumbnails from the first file even though you may be playing the 2nd file, 3rd file, or beyond.
I just renamed a title according to the HC article, re-scanned it, waited for the preview thumbnails to rebuild, then tried playing it back. The behavior is exactly the same.
As I suspected, the naming convention is not the issue. The reason I suspected this because Roku works correctly. So the issue is specifically with how PMS and Android TV interact with a multi-part title and preview thumbnails enabled.
This problem persists in PMS 1.32.5.7349. Looks like it was noticed at least 22 months ago:
Previews work fine after part 1 in the Plex Web Player and on Roku (tested with a Premiere and Ultra). This is with both the supported “partX” naming convention as well as the undocumented “(Part X)” naming. I’m fairly certain this is a bug. Whether it’s a player bug on Android TV clients or with PMS, I’m not sure.
I’m now on PMS 1.32.6.7468 and Android TV Player 9.30.0.3604, this behavior is still broken with that combination whether I’m using a documented naming convention or an undocumented one.
I’m now up to PMS 1.40.0.7775 and Android TV Player 10.6.0.5141. The bug still persists and is very easily reproducible. I’ve noticed that the Plex-hosted Web player also exhibits this behavior.
