Can not watch Live TV while channel is recording

Server Version#: 1.32.7.7621 on Ubuntu 18 on AMD x64
Player Version#: Latest nVidia Shield

I can record Live TV, but with the latest update I can no longer watch a recording in progress. If I try to tune the channel being recorded I get “There was an error attempting to tune the channel.” I’m expecting to be asked if I want to join the broadcast live, or start at the beginning of the recording. This used to work (sort of - it often joined live regardless of my selection. Great for football games you wanted to watch without knowing the score…).

Tuner is an HD Homerun 4K Flex on firmware 20230719 (latest). If I go to the HD Homerun app I can tune the channel just fine, and the recording is working. If I wait for it to complete it’s there and watchable. I also have no trouble watching the channel live if it’s not recording.

Same problem - Cannot watch a channel “live” while it’s being recorded by DVR (all my DVR recordings are scheduled, so this probably doesn’t happen if you manually started recording a show - but I haven’t tried).

This started when I upgraded to 1.32.7.7621

Previously on 1.30.2.6563 - and I had this issue on rare occasion, but not consistently.

Plex running in Ubuntu image in Proxmox with HD Home Run Flex 4k. This happens both with Plex client on Shield and Android.

Seems to happen any time a channel is being recorded. I just tried to tune into the 49ers-Eagles game, and it won’t tune because another user is already watching that channel and it’s therefore being buffered to disk.

I am just about done with Plex honestly. Last 100 releases have been a bunch of junk while core features lag. LiveTV has never really been good on this platform. Probably worth shelling out for the HD Homerun DVR software at this point.

I’m having the same issue with an HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO. Any time I tune to a channel and it starts a recording in progress, I cannot then tune to any channel (same or other) on another device. Plex shows that only one out of four tuners is in use, but I also get the “There was an error attempting to tune the channel.” error. Very frustrating.

I tried upgrading to the latest beta version but that didn’t help. Next step will probably be downgrading to a previous stable version, if I can remember which one actually worked well… I don’t know what’s going on with Plex, but it seems like release testing has gone downhill. This is the 3rd release lately where I’ve encountered new major issues that I’ve never had before.

Had issue on server version 1.32.7.7621 and now beta version 1.32.8.7639 on Windows

Same exact thing is happening to me. I’m running a different HD Homerun, but everything else you said is the same.

Yeah I tried a quick install on a Windows box and got the same behavior, so it’s not platform specific - or if it is it’s x64 as opposed to linux/windows

Would be great if someone from Plex could at least acknowledge this. Clearly it’s a new bug. Want to know that it’s in the backlog, and I guess we now need to figure out how far back to downgrade.

More info on this thread…

Looks like an Android client issue (even though it didn’t manifest until I upgraded my server…whatever). Beta including a fix and be out soon. We’ll see.

Not limited to Android. It happened using the web client on a Windows PC as well.

I just found a server update on a check, and loaded it. Everything is restarted. I’m waiting for a pre-schedule recording to start to see whether it’s fixed.

I note that logging on to Plex on a browser (Chrome - Windows) I can watch a channel that’s already being recorded just fine. For me the combination that doesn’t work is the Plex Server (Windows 10), and either Android TV app or Android phone app.

Will be back if there are still problems…

UPDATE the new server version didn’t fix anything. It’s still broke. Which is super disappointing. I did confirm that the iOS app works fine. Android anything seems to be broken. I also confirmed, based on the comment above that the web browser client works just fine.

There was no mention of this issue in the release notes, and no-one from Plex has chimed in to even acknowledge the issue, so not surprised there’s no change in the new version.

Working now - Android Client 10.5.0.4996 on Nvidia Shield, plus Media Server 1.32.8.7639 does work. More details in the other thread linked above.

Here too. Android client update on the Shield fixed it. Mixed emotions about this. Glad it was fixed relatively quickly. Can’t help but wish that it was easier to know when the Plex devs are aware of an issue and even better if theres a target for fixing it.
