Using XMLTV?: I don’t believe so
Channel number/Name: in the error logs, 7.1 CBS is the channel I showed couldn’t be tuned, as it was recording, then switched to 4.1 ABC which you’ll see DID tune (because it wasn’t being recorded) and then I cancelled the recording using the web UI, then attempted to tune to 7.1 CBS again and as expected, it worked this time because it was no longer recording. Although this issue applies to any channel in “Local Antenna 1” that’s being recorded. Plex Media Server Logs_2023-11-20_07-27-37.zip (3.7 MB)
I get the following error on the Android TV client whenever I try to tune to a channel that’s currently recording:
Same here! Came to the forums hoping for a solution.
I also use an HDHomeRun network tuner. I’ve tried restarting Plex (both client and server) as well as rebooting the tuner, to no avail. This is a really annoying problem, as one of the key advantages of Plex is being able to watch a show while recording it.
One annoying but effective workaround until Plex makes a fix, is to stop the recording currently happening, then tune to that channel, then you can start the recording again.
I don’t think that will help me, because my use case is to start watching a show from the beginning after it started, so that I can skip commercials. For instance, I will start watching Survivor at 7:30 so that I can zip through commercials and still end at 8:30 or so. If I have to stop the recording, tune to the channel, and resume the recording then I’ll be watching live, correct?
Also, I share some of my recordings with my Mom so she would be annoyed with the recording being split.
I’m surprised there isn’t more noise about this issue, as it’s a huge reason why people use DVRs. In fact, it’s one of the main reasons I still use Plex for DVR.
I just made a post about this same issue but removed it after finding this.
Here’s what I had in my post
Server Version#: Windows Version 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: Android Version 10.4.0.4843
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun EXTEND HDTC-2US
I noticed this on the Android Beta a couple weeks ago. All of a sudden when trying to tune to any channel that’s currently recording I get the following error “There was an error while attempting to tune the selected channel. Please check your connection and try again.” This error pops up immediately, it doesn’t even ask if I want to watch from the beginning or live. If I use the plex web app it works fine. I can watch any other channel that isn’t currently recording and I can stop the recording and then watch what was recorded without issue.
When I saw this a couple weeks ago I left the beta, uninstalled, and reinstalled the stable release and that fixed it. Well now that beta seems to have went to the public/stable release yesterday as now I have that same issue. Surprised this made it past the beta
I think what they’re saying is to stop the recording and then go into the guide and record again. There will be a file you can watch up to the point you stopped and then another file will be there after completion that you can watch the rest with. Not ideal and you will not get to “catch up” but does work. Hopefully they patch this soon.
I’m not happy to see others having the problem, but I am glad we’re all here to shout a little more loudly TOGETHER.
Yes, my temp solution is just to help watch live TV at all since this bug will shut you out from that channel until the recording is finished. Stopping the recording, tuning in live, then starting the recording again. It isn’t an ideal solution if you want your recordings to be uninterrupted.
BUT you can still watch your show without commercials, just do the above (stop, tune, start) and then pause your live TV stream for 20 min or so. Then you will be 20 min behind and can zip thru the commercials. But again, it will leave you with two split recordings. You can also tune in BEFORE the recording starts, but that requires timing and planning and who has THAT in 2023? LOL
I fixed the problem by uninstalling the most recent version of Plex for Android TV and (using “send to TV” app and APKmirror site) downloaded and installed version 10.2.0.4488 (83522c5) and it’s all working correctly now.
So whenever a Plex support person can help, the issue is a bug introduced in the most recent version of the plex android TV app.
Just wanted to add that I’m having this problem too and is very annoying. Like others have said on here, I use this all the time - record a programme, and start watching 20-30mins in, so I can skip commercials and still end at the same time, etc.
Super disappointing. The “watch from start” which was broken for so long on Android TV finally got fixed and has been stable for some time. Now broken again. I hope this wont be a year long thread like in the past to get this fixed.
I have the same problem. I use the Plex app on Google/Android TV and Android phone. The Plex server is running on a Mac Mini. I’m currently trying out Jellyfin since I’m getting pretty tired of there always being some kind of problem somewhere. Maybe the developers or their managers need to learn about test automation and its value in preventing regression type bugs.
Ugh, add me to the list for hitting this and have it mess up my football watching plans. So it sounds like the TV/apk is where the issue was introduced, not on the PC/server side?
Correct. This appears to be a reproducable issue with the Android TV client app. Can confirm that 10.2.xxx doesn’t have the bug, others seem to be OK with 10.3.xxx but not 10.4.xxx right?
Can anyone post simple instructions to turn off app auto update on a CCwGtv and/or other common androidTV streamers? Nvidia Shield is a flagship for user options but not so much with other ATV devices. It might help us all until Plex decides to fix this.
I only have an NVidia Shield and Android TV, so can’t comment on other devices … but for me, you go to the Play Store, go to settings, and there is an option to turn off app auto-updates.
For me 10.3 works. 10.4 (and 10.5 beta) do not work.
