Can't access to PMS after changing manually the public port to 28598

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry I have to open a new thread about accessing a PMS but I have literally everything I have found that could solve my problem.

So I have Plex Media Server (latest version) installed on a Synology DS218+. It has been like 6 months since we (me and my family) use it for Plex on various devices (Plex Web, iOS, Android, PS4) and I had no problems until today.

I was on the Plex Web GUI looking at the settings and I saw in the “Remote access” tab that i had no remote access but I could still see the IP address on both Public and Private (on the public ip address I had a “cross” while I had an “arrow pointing to the left” next to the private ip address). So because it was bothering me I decided to manually set a public port and I set it to 28598 as it was next to the public IP address on top. When I pressed 'apply", I couldn’t connect to my PMS anymore in any device around the house including the Plex Web GUI. When I’m in the Web GUI using the app.plex.tv link that I always use, i have this :

It says : The server “Plex Media Player (DS218+)” is unavailable"
Before you ask, yes I tried restarting PMS on the NAS.

I began to search a solution and I found this one : Plex doesn't find my server which was the most related to my problem I guess.

It worked but unfortunately, the fact that I have to connect via another url (I have to use this one : http://192.168.0.21:32400/web/index.html which is the local NAS IP address) is really bothering me.

I used to connect directly with app.plex.tv and it was detected automaticaly. Also, when I’m on the Plex Web GUI, in the list of servers that you can select to load the library, I have two PMS : one I can’t connect to anymore after I changed the port like a dumbass, and the other PMS is the one I can access after I have followed the “solution” of the link above.

I wrote “solution” because for me it’s just a temporary solution : it’s not sophisticated like it was before, having to always connect via the IP, etc… It’s just not conveniant for me. Even he, the author of the solution, knows it : “so please refrain from using that for the time being at least” he wrote.

To resume : I can’t access to PMS via app.plex.tv anymore, I have to use my PMS local IP address in the url, I still have the first PMS displayed in the server list after I tried trumpy81’s solution and I can’t delete it.

I hope someone can help me because it’s frustrating and I don’t want to reinstall Plex as it would also delete metadatas.

Thank you by advance and have a nice day.

If you didn’t get it, I want to get back to where I was, that is when I connected via app.plex.tv and had only one PMS showing

Hey, it’s you again lol

First of all, thank you for your quick answer.

I manage to solve the problem by deleting the first PMS from the device manager.
Also, for some random reason, I could access the PMS via app.plex.tv again, even tho I did what you explained in the other topic so I don’t have to use the local IP address of the NAS anymore. I still don’t know how it happened but it happened.

As for setting up the remote access I’m gonna try right now your solution and I’ll let you know if it worked.

Thank you again.

I have a problem. When I said that I solved the problem, the connection to the server was secured and it had the lock next to it and in the URL. But now, I saw that it wasn’t secured anymore and in the URL it says “Non secured” so I’m lost right now. It’s like my PMS is changing things by itself and I don’t understand anymore. Before I try and reboot my router and set the public port to 32400, I want to solve this problem first.

Ok, remote access worked. But I still have the non secured connection problem. The “Secure Connections” option was on "Preferred since the beginning so any other option ?

Talked too soon. After I opened PMS via app.plex.tv, this is what I got :

It says : “Impossible to establish a secured connection with « Plex Media Server (DS218+) ».”
And in the bottom it shows me the option to authorize non secured connections.

After I saw this, I’ve launched immediately PMS via the IP address and this happened :

I can’t access remotely anymore.
Again, I don’t know what to do anymore.

I reapplied the port and it worked but I have no clue on :

I’m sorry if I ask a lot but it’s just that I never had such difficulty solving something and I didn’t buy over $600 of NAS and drives and Plex just for it to fail.

Yes I clicked on it. Is it bad ?
And what is a custom certificates ?

I did what you told me to do and unfortunately it did not work. I still have an unsecured connection.

I still want to thank for the time you put into my problem and for your reactivity.

After trying and trying… I finally decided to restore my NAS because I couldn’t even launch PMS on it and I don’t know why. I also called my ISP but they didn’t know how to help me with the first problem.
Now my question is : Can I transfer my metadatas back to the Plex folder ? I backed up all of the Plex folder with the preference.xml and all before I restored th NAS just in case. I really don’t want to spend a day selecting each and every film and episode and putting the right infos and jackets… to have a clean library like before.

The short answer: Yes

  1. Install PMS
  2. Let it start once (at package installation)
  3. Stop it.
  4. Control Panel - Shared Folders - EDIT (the Plex share)
  5. Permissions tab - Add your username if necessary - Save changes
  6. Open File Station
  7. Open the Plex share.
  8. Delete the transient Library directory Plex just created at initial start. We won’t need it.
  9. Place the ZIP file in the Plex share.
  10. Unzip it
  11. Upon completion, you will again have a Library directory.
  12. In the LEFT pane, right-click Library → Properties.
  13. Make plex the owner (as shown below)
  14. Check the box (Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files)
  15. “OK”
  16. Verify Plex has R/W or Full access again
  17. Package Center → Start Plex.

(PS: please ignore the dual entries for plex on my development system. It’s due to be reset itself. I trash it frequently :smiling_imp: )
