Can't claim server on Synology NAS (DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 3)

Hi, I wasn’t able to reclaim my server (denied) after trying several methods after I had to reset my Plex password. So I tried to purge Plex from my Synology and start over. No dice on that method either. Every time I create a new server it gives me a fleeting error (“cannot communicate with plex.tv”) and then moves to the next step (adding libraries that it can’t actually read).

I’m not a super-technical person when it comes to networking but it was easy to set up the first time! Not so much now. Please help, thanks!

Thanks for including the versions of DSM & Plex Media Server.

For claiming to work, Plex Media Server must be able to communicate with systems at plex.tv.

As a quick test of Internet connectivity, make sure the NAS is synchronized with a public NTP (time) server.

  1. Login to the NAS → Synology Control Panel → Regional Options → Time tab
  2. Select Synchronize with NTP server, pick a server from the list, and update.
  3. You should see Status: Normal.

After that, follow FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out).

It will have you uninstall, then re-install Plex Media Server. During the re-installation you will use a claim code from plex.tv/claim.

If that does not work, report back with the text of any error messages that appear.

Also include a set of Plex server log files. To manually retrieve the files:

  1. Using Synology File Station, navigate to the Plex Data Folder (/PlexMediaServer/…)
  2. Right click on the Logs directory and choose Compress to Logs.zip.
  3. Download the zip file and attach to the thread.

Aha! Thank you! You were right! It wasn’t connecting properly. The NAS had been up for a few hundred days and when I rebooted it, it was able to access the time server properly. I’m rebuilding the Plex libraries now.

Thanks for your help!

(though I do think this whole help thing would be easier with just a ticket system than a forum! )
