Can't upload new photos

Server Version#:6.2.2
Player Version#: Plex
I have several hundred family photos on my Synology 218+ server. The photos are there, no problem, and they are in the Plex Photos area. I have previously been able to go to my Plex Media Server, edit the Photos library, point Plex to the Photos area, and upload the appropriate subfolders. That has worked just fine - until now. My photos subfolders are by year, with further subfolders under that. So, the 2021 folder uploaded and plays fine on Plex - all the media players. However, I cannot get Plex to recognize the 2022 folder. On my Plex Media Server, I have gone to Photos, Edit Library, and pointed to the folder I want - the 2022 folder. I click Save Changes, and I scan for new files. The media server shows it is active for a few seconds, and then nothing. The 2022 folder does not show up on any of my Plex media players. All of the other photos are still there and they all still play. It is only this most recent one that won’t play. I’m at a loss. Can you suggest ideas that may help me solve this problem in Plex?

Does the system account used by your Plex Media Server on the Syno have permission to see/access that new folder?

Depending on what version of DMS you’re running your server, this will be plex (DSM 5, 6) or PlexMediaServer (DSM 7).

Well, this may show a lot of ignorance on my part, but I don’t know. I assume I am running DSM6 on my server. That hasn’t changed. The path is /Volume1/Photos/[folder I want to include]. Plex has been able to see everything is /Volume1/Photos before. Would new permissions be needed to go back to Photos and see a new folder there?

  1. Control Panel - Info Center will tell you which version of DSM you are using.

  2. It’s somewhat common for permissions to get mixed up when uploading.
    – If you’re using Windows, when you upload to DSM, the folders are created and only allow your username to see them.
    – Linux is, by nature, strict on this (one user cannot see another’s files without expressly granted permission)
    – DSM doesn’t prevent or manage permissions very well.
    – It can happen, which it seems like you might have here, Permissions for Plex granted at the Shared Folder level, need to be manually extended again to all files and folder inside the shared folder.

Look here to see if this FAQ is of help. While fixing Plex’s permissions, you can also fix the permissions so you can continue to upload

Chuck, your solution worked. It was a problem with permissions in DSM 6. Evidently, somewhere between the last time I updated photos and this time, Synology changed permissions. But the tip you gave worked. Thanks you.
