Changed Password And All Worked, Now Everything Is "Unavailable"

Mouse over the poster of a film whose title starts with A because they will have been scanned by now, and choose the vertical dots menu … then choose More info and check the file path listed. Is it correct? Does the film play?

Also on that menu is Analyze which takes a closer look at the file that’s already been found by the scan at the path listed in More Info.

When you have a Movies library, and you mouse over the three verticle dots next to the name of the library, you can find an Analyze menu in there somewhere, but it’s not needed if your scan still can’t find the file.

If you want to analyze the whole library, click the 3 dots next to the library name

Or on any poster you can you can click the 3 dots and analyze just that individual show or movie

I don’t know exactly where you are in this process. If your server is not claimed you might also want to take a look at this

If you’re sure the server is claimed and you still can’t access your media it may be a permissions issue

If you can’t get back on track and need step by step instructions at some point I suggest you tag ChuckPa

OK. I selected the first movie in the library, clicked on the three dots, clicked on “analyze,” and it reverted to the library screen showing all the movies. I then clicked on the movie thumbnail art and this is what I see …

Notice the small circle with the +/arrow - on screen border of this circle is moving - which suggests to me that it’s analyzing the file - and the red box says the move is unavailable. If this is indeed a permissions issue, I’m not sure how to proceed. Also, how do I tag ChuckPa?

After I replied to JaysPlex7 I went back and selected the 2nd movie in the list, clicked the 3 dots, but didn’t see “More info” among the choices. I clicked on “analyze,” and it’s now working on that file as well. The file path looks right, the files appear in the list of movies, but both are listed as “Unavailable.” It’s coming into vampire hours here so I’m gonna have to pick this up in the morning. Thanks again for your patience and assistance.

To ping someone you just put the “@” symbol in front of their name. "@"ChuckPa

I don’t know if he’s around and like you said it’s late. Try it tomorrow, good luck

We’ll see you in the morning. :pikawave:

A Scan Library Files will find a movie. Using Get Info would show you where it found it.
But that’s not why I asked you to Scan. Let me explain please.

In your OP you describe three issues.

  1. server unavailable (i figured unclaimed)
  2. strangeness in posters and thumbs (indicating maybe permissions, scan/refresh, or repair db)
  3. certain media unavailable (needs a plex dance or sqlite3 repair or drive failing or?)

We solved (1) and you’re back in control where things work partially. However in the process:

  • You struggled to find a Get Info because I wasn’t clear
  • Sadly on the Details page, the Get Info is hidden in the horizontal dots menu …
  • I wanted you to mouse over a poster on your Home page (or Movies Library View).[1]

What we can do for: (2) Poster weirdness (3) Movies unavailable

  • Clarify from you what works and what doesn’t, e.g. all TV shows are fine, some films no.
  • Enable debug mode following the directions in this article.
  • Get a description of where your media lives in your QNAP filesystem. We need to know folder names and locations, what shares you’ve made. Basic stuff.
  • Get logs from the server to double check it’s healthy.[2]
  • fsck your drives.
  • Reach out for help when we know the above.

Fixing poster and thumbnail weirdness can’t happen until we understand why you see Unavailable for a movie you didn’t delete. It seems like a lot because it is, but you’re doing great. They don’t make QNAPs all that easy to work with, and Plex has it’s quirks.

  1. Home page posters will show Get Info when you click the vertical dots. ↩︎

  2. You would reboot the QNAP 451 and give it a full 15min to do whatever it really wants to do, then use the hosted web app and go into Settings → Troubleshooting → Download Logs. Then drop the zip file it gives you into your reply. ↩︎

Thanks very much for your reply. Sorry I’ve been out of the loop - had problems with my internet connection and computer, I think I’ve got 'em fixed now.

For grins and giggles, I logged in to my NAS from the Mac Finder and checked the files in the server multimedia folder. Every single .m4v media file had been renamed with a “filename”.m4v.deadbolt extension, and when I looked at the files in Finder column view they were all listed as “executable” files. This looks like one reason why PMS is not able to “find” and “play” my media files. How and why this happened is beyond me, but the obvious question is how can I fix this? As a test, I copied several files from a backup drive to my NAS and these files are all listed as .m4v and all can be played from the Finder column view screen. I’m speculating that, even though my NAS is not exposed to the internet, maybe I’ve picked up some kind of malware. Am I off base? Any suggestions about how I might rectify this problem? Thanks for your suggestions and assistance.

:sos: @davetraweek I’m sorry but your NAS has been compromised by Deadbolt Malware. :sos:

Take immediate corrective action!

Dang, that’s what I thought. I’m now in the middle of following the directions at the link you provided (which was very kind of you and most helpful). I hope that works. I’m guessing that I’m gonna need to dump the compromised files and reload all of my media files - sure glad I’ve got backups on stand-alone hard drives. I’m not sure how my NAS got infected, as the only things onboard are apps downloaded directly from QNAP and my media files (which once loaded to the NAS are static thereafter). Again, a heartfelt Thanks for your patience and kind assistance. :grinning:

I hear QNAP’s got some security issues. If you expose your NAS externally (for remote login or access), then anyone can get to the QNAP and make use of exploits to run programs (install virus). Especially if you have not updated the security/OS since it was installed.

Synology (what I use) has a feature where they can give you a domain name that resolves to the login page for the NAS anywhere on the internet. I hear QNAP has something similar. The problem is that anyone can get a list of ALL people that use this feature, then try to access these domains to log into the device remotely.

Thanks for you reply. Although I’m a NAS newbie, so far as I know my QNAP NAS is not exposed to the internet, and is not configured for external access. I only access it within my own home network to stream movies. I don’t download from any source other than QNAP and Plex app updates. Up until this deadbolt malware episode, my NAS has performed perfectly. I’m hoping I can rectify my problem and resume normal operations soon. Thanks again for your input.

It’s weird how malwayre sneaks in, especially given your lack of remote access. Like Divideby0 mentioned, maybe you’re in QNAPCloud and don’t know it

Raise your Malware issue on the QNAP US forum. There are great people like mooglestiltskin and OneCD who can help you follow the best practice.

I would also open a support ticket with QNAP because QTS is a moving target.

Wiping it and starting from scratch is easiest yes, and reasonably fast. If you’re database backups are not locked or corrupt, you might try to restore PMS later. The Plex articles on that are good.
