I have recently lost access to my entire library of TV shows and movies etc. It was all working fine last week. Looking on the web player of Plex (i.e. Plex.tv) and in the (empty) Home Screen and clicking on MORE, I see that there are two servers, my Synology NAS and my desktop Mac mini M2 desktop computer.
I usually serve films etc. from the NAS; should I be using my Mac M2? Is this why the system can’t seem to find my files (which are definitely there on the NAS)?
I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction, please. Thanks.
It sounds like all your pinned libraries got unpinned. If the libraries are all listed under More you just need to go through and re-pin the libraries, and arrange the order to suit you.
You are free to host media on whichever Plex server you want (NAS or Mac Mini), but most people would have only one Plex server running (on the more capable device, the one that is more power efficient, or the one that operates 24/7 if the other doesn’t). It depends on what you value most. The storage for the media can be on whichever device you want but needs to operate at least at all times the Plex server is up.
Then go to Authorized Devices, sort for Servers, and delete the entry for Plex Media Server on the Mac. Do not delete the entry for Plex on the Synology. If there are any old/outdated servers listed, then delete them as well.
Synology Control Panel → Info Center
NAS model?
DSM version?
Synology Package Center → Plex Media Server (click on Plex icon) → Installed Version
Plex Media Server version?
If Plex Media Server is not running, start it.
Login to Plex using the IP address of the NAS. For example, if the IP address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web (or https if needed).
Go to Settings (wrench icon) → server_name → Libraries (not Library).
“SYNOLOGY: Sorry, the page you are looking for is not found.” Using https gives me a “Secure Connection Failed” error. I may be barking up the wrong tree, I realise.
Logging directly in to your Plex Media Server, instead of using app.plex.tv.
For example, the IP address of my DS918+ is 192.168.1.50. I can login to the Plex Media Server via http://192.168.1.50:32400/web.
Try this:
Reboot the NAS. Wait however long it takes for the NAS to reboot and Plex to start.
Point a browser at http://address.of.nas:32400/identity. You should see one line of XML with claimed="0" (unclaimed) or claimed="1" (claimed). If you see a secure connection warning go ahead and proceed. You’re connecting to your own server. This is just a test that Plex is running and responding.
Great, thanks for your clear instructions, I did step 1 & 2 (the server in the XML was 1, claimed)
I could indeed log into my own account at http://address.of.nas:32400/web . The server settings page (Version 1.43.5.11029) confirmed that I had claimed the server, but the libraries aren’t anyway to be seen. Although the system page refers to the Mac mini, rather than the NAS, where all the files live. i.e. Settings>Mac mini>Libraries
Should I be keeping all the said files on the Mac mini, anyway? Plex seems to be using Plex Media Server on the Mac again (see your help in posting 3, above.)
