Constant Buffering on Xbox One

Yep same here, got buffering every 15 mins on a 1080P DTS audio movie only doing 6mbps, an hour earlier I watched in full a 4k non hdr video that was around 50 mbps bandwidth.

The issues make no sense and Plex Devs REALLY need to focus on this instead of crap features no one wants.

More issues again last night. Tried playing two episodes both 720p (4mbit), neither one would start just ā€œbufferingā€. Tested with direct stream on and off, made no difference at all. Tried watching through Kodi with Plex plugin and it work straight away.

Hi all. Sorry for the lack of updates here, but thats been mostly due to the fact that we don’t have many updates to report around this area yet. But we’ve been in contact with Microsoft about the issue trying to find a solution for what we believe is a platform issue, and perhaps find a workaround that we can implement that doesn’t involve something drastic like adding a bitrate cap. Microsoft are still investigating it and we’re providing help with their investigations where we can. A while back they released some changes that I know helped a fair few users but obviously there are still users, in and out of this thread, that are affected. We’re continuing to work to find a solution and hope to find one in the near future, we are by no means sitting on the issue!

Is there any chance that the incoming XBox 1904 update (that addresses buffering issues with 4k content) might also address the buffereing experienced when playing/skipping recorded TV files?

So far the 1904 update that they ā€œsayā€ fixes the 4k issues actually hasn’t fixed it even though they marked it fixed in the alpha ring. The update actually made buffering problem’s worse for me

Agreed, issues became worse with update, certainly not fixed for DVRd content, yet again 4k.

I currently have the 1904 version (Omega) installed and buffering issues are not present anymore for 1080p content.

However after 1min of 4K video it immediately gets into a buffering loop. Fast forwarding, pausing, playing again helps until the problem comes back.

When I monitor my Synology network I see that the moment buffering happens nothing is being pushed from the Plex server. It uses 0 resources and 0 bandwith. That means it’s not an issue of buffering. In fact what happens is either the Plex App just stops requesting stream, or the Xbox One does that, or the Plex Servers stops sending out.

Although I do tend to believe it’s a Microsoft issue since other apps are behaving badly lately as well. Probably to push their Microsoft Video services or getting 4K Blu Rays.

This was how mine was acting awhile ago, mine is more sporadic now but previously to all the OS updates my 4k HDR video would start buffering at exactly 3 mins.

Now it can be random and almost always happens when playing TrueHD/Atmos content which for some reason transcodes to AAC

Having the same issue here. Can’t believe how long this has been going on for!

100% has to do with the quality of the content on your plex server. Ive been using my Gen1 Xbox One for the past 3 days to watch movies off my plex server, seen it buffer once or twice, tops. And we re talkin 6+ hours of video playback per day.

The two movies that I did get a buffering error on were highly compressed videos (less than 5gigs per file) Majority of my movie collection are rips of at least 10 gigs in size.

I went ahead and enrolled in the insider program and installed 1904. I’m seeing no change in the buffering I’ve been experiencing when skipping forward or back when navigating recorded tv (hdhomerun prime via Plex).

Navigating live tv streams via the hdhomerun app on the xbox one has always been instantaneous. I believe the live streaming and recordings (full quality .ts files) are the same (correct?). Not sure why the hdhomerun app handles these flawlessly while Plex can’t.

Once converted to .mp4 (hq) with mcebuddy, Plex performance is perfect.

I don’t have any 4k content on my server. All my media has been recorded from broadcast, so I can’t comment on the (apparently different) issue people are experiencing when trying to play 4k material.

I’m new to plex, I have it installed on all my devices, for the first 2 days on my xbox one plex worked like a dream, and then all of a sudden buffering issues appeared like everyone else is describing.

Maybe the Atmos track could be the reason and not necessarily the 4K stream?

EDIT: After doing some tests it has indeed nothing to do with the video codec but the audio codec. I have only tested with a couple of videos so can’t be all to certain but I’ve only encountered sudden stops when the 4K video consisted an Atmos Track. DTS:X is working fine.

The April update (1904- non beta) seemed to resolve a lot of the issues- but not all. The majority of higher bitrate files can now play (DVRd through hdhomerun prime), There are a few exceptions where I get absolutely nothing but a buffer with no video or audio.

4K improved, a bit. I am yet to test a file which xbox can play native, but when using h265-non hdr (not native on xbox, I believe), I tried to transcode 2160p on xbox settings, while the server showed hw transcode down to 1080p (8700k, gtx1080, local).

So, better, but not quite there. Also still missing TV guide.

So I sent a plex dev some 4k HDR videos with Truehd/Atmos tracks as samples of what was causing my buffering issues and they were not able to reproduce the issue on their end @elazz since you are seeing the same issues I am can you contact @moussa and provide him with some logs and or info on the problems you are having with TrueHD/Atmos?

I think we are having the same issues but if Plex cannot reproduce it I don’t think it will get fixed and if you can give him more info it may help.

I’ve provided debug logs when the issue happens and sample movie files that cause buffering for me.

thanks for all your help!! this is really annoying. I love Plex but the fact that I can’t watch 4k/atmos in my new movie room bothers me. we need to draw more attention to this issue.

Please ping @moussa on issues with 4k HDR TrueHD/Atmos and buffering on the Xbox. He has taken logs and movie files from me but cannot reproduce the issue.

I see we have multiple people here having the same issue as me on this so the Plex devs need more data from everyone to determine what the issue is since they can’t reproduce it.

I’ve had some success if I manually change the video quality of my stream.

I also noticed that even when running a 1080p file at 20mbps I can see my Xbox pushing 75 or 100mbps to my router…weird!

Could you perhaps share those media files via drive/dropbox etc. just so I can test with the same footage. I’ll try to do some troubleshooting and generate logs over the easter weekend

Still broken with no end in sight.
