Constant Buffering on Xbox One

Where do you enable the direct stream option?

Same thing is happening to me - I actually opened another topic because this is getting stupid now.

The issue seems to be getting worse. Earlier I was getting buffering issues during playback but now most videos won’t even start playing, with a constant buffering message. It’s so annoying as I have just recently spent a lot of money on a new hard drive for my server. I have experimented with both H264 and H265 content but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. I regret buying the Plex Lifetime Pass.

I have been comparing playback with Emby tonight (both on XBox one) with the same 20 movie files. Some movies are OK on both but many fail to even start playing. I get exactly the same symptoms (for each movie) under both Plex and Emby. When movies start playing both Plex and Emby they buffer at the same points in the movie. The movies that fail to start playing under Plex also fail to start under Emby too. All of the movies play fine on my phone using both the Plex and Emby apps. As others have said, this is clearly an XBox one issue, not isolated to just Plex.

Well I’ve posted about it on Xbox forums and we are not getting any real replies from them either. I don’t care whose fault it is I’m a paying customer from both companies and want someone to step up and at least communicate what the progress is of this issue.

Wouldn’t it be nice if actual plex devs were reading this forum and would just take a few mins out of their day to update us on this year old problem?

Thanks for comparison DarrenL81! It’s nice to finally have confirmation that it’s the Xbox and not Plex.

I know most people already know this but for what it’s worth, as a workaround for the meantime you can use Kodi’s SMB feature to access your movies that are in your Plex folder. It works the exact same way, it loads all the movie metatdata, etc. with no buffering. Just point Kodi to the same movie folder that Plex is using.

Does kodi on the Xbox work with 4k HDR files?

Good question, I’m not sure if Kodi can stream 4K/HDR content.

Another Xbox One S user that just bought the Xbox One S as a media controller. Like a lot of others here, I have a direct wired gigabit network with a Xeon based server that has plenty of power for Plex and transcoding. I don’t have Emby but I do believe this to be an Xbox issue. Would appreciate some others seeing what they get on playing 4K content using the Youtube app on Xbox One S or X. I noticed that a lot of the 4K youtube content will stutter while playing even though the audio is fine and never is interrupted. It appears that the Xbox cannot keep up with the video stream. Now, not all 4K content does the stuttering but most, on mine, does. Especially some of the Timestorm 4K videos that are on Youtube. I have plenty of internet speed with 250 meg down. Playing these same videos with the Youtube 4K app that is in my Samsung TV does not show any stuttering and plays them perfectly. Therefore, I have to believe that the Xbox is the one with the issue. I am beginning to wish I never bought it.

djowell,

I tried installing Kodi on my XBox One X the other day but for some reason SMB was not available? Any idea why? Do I need to install an add-on for SMB? I looked at YouTube videos and could see where it was meant to be but it wasn’t there.

Many thanks

Darren

Do you have DLNA enabled on your server? I don’t use Kodi but I use the VLC player on Xbox with DLNA.

Nope. I’m going to try this (NFS) tomorrow night:

Yes, you have to install the SMB add-on… it should be listed in the default add-ons. From there… I will have to verify my settings. First you have to make your folder shareable on Windows. Then you can follow the following instructions… find all mentions of SMB on this page: https://kodi.wiki/view/Adding_video_sources

In Kodi’s smb settings, you have to enter your ip address. For username and password you will have to enter your Windows credentials. It might take a bit of figuring out but it does work.

Sorry, I am not able to check my settings at the moment!

will it platy 4k hdr videos in this manner?

I’m having this problem too. But tbh Plex has generally become MUCH more unreliable. Constant buffering, mostly in X1 but also web player etc. What is going on?

Got Kodi installed tonight. Once going videos seem to play reliably (much better than Plex and Emby) but when I start playing videos I seem to get the sound for 5-10 seconds without a picture. I’ve also seen odd green screens at start of playback. Why do we have so many playback issues on the XBox. Overall the interface for Kodi is horrible compared to Plex and Emby. In my opinion Emby has the best interface, but it’s no good if the videos don’t play reliably.

Does plex still have employee’s? Why can’t we get them to repsond to anything?

I’ve seen that green screen before… in kodi’'s video settings, try disabling hardware acceleration. I agree, although this gets around the Plex buffering issue, it still has a few minor issues. But most of the time it works. I have seen more issues with DLNA with VLC and Film&Video App than Kodi though. Kodi nevers has any video codec or audio issues. Anyways, let me know if it works.

Busy adding and supporting features no one asked for/wants I guess.

Also premium member here. I have 4 Xboxes one in the house…3 s and a regular .all get the dreaded buffering here and there…and when it happens the only way to correct is by stopping the movie and starting it again

At first l thought it was my server
.but now I have a i7 with 64 Meg’s of ram…main drive is SSD…all device are hardlined with 1gb switches and router. I can stream a movie to my phone with 0 issues…but not the Xboxes…it’s hard to believe that Plex does not have an update on this issue
