Constant Buffering on Xbox One

Hi Moussa, you seem to be the only one that responds on this forum. Please can you give us an update on this issue? It’s worse than ever as of a few weeks ago. Many unable to use Plex at all at the moment as the buffering is so frequent and incredibly annoying. Happy to provide whatever logs/evidence you need. We do need an update though.

Adding my name to this ever-growing list of people using XB1 as a Plex player. This buffering issue has been going on for over a year - where’s the update from Plex Support/Devs? Maybe something more substantial than, “we know about it and we’re working on it.”

I have an old Roku3 that streams perfectly over AC wireless, but the XB1 app can’t do it over a GB wired connection? Plex Server logs show two things: Either the transcoder crashes at random intervals or the Plex buffer can’t find the next “chunk” of data to send over the wire and it errors out, both causing the client to “buffer.”

Lack of support and updates to this thread are frustrating to say the least.

I don’t get any buffering, so I think it has something to do with the network settings or PC hardware. My guess it’s a bug that Plex doesn’t play nice with certain network settings. I’m willing to help people out with this problem. Maybe copying my setting will help.

Movies buffer and TV shows play mostly fine for me; although some skip around a bit. This is on my Xbox One. Watching “Goodfellas” last night and after restarting 3 times, I ended up firing up chrome from my andriod. I’d rather watch thru the Xbox because my input for that is a much better picture. I’ve tweaked and tweaked the chrome input on my TV to no avail.

Are there ANY MOD AT ALL that read this stuff? Xbox App updates are one a week or so, but none fix the buffering.

HELP PLEASE

After months of issues, with no support I gave up. Bought an Apple TV and now it works 100%. Same server, same network, heck even the same files, so there is obviously something very wrong with the xbox version.

1080p and lower works fine all the time on a xbox one X.
4k will randomly start buffering indefinitely on xbox one X.

4k plays fine on all other devices including my phone/laptop/PC.

Still no comment or help from Plex support. How an earth do you get hold of these guys? We are all Plex Pass paying customers, you’d think they’d be worried about losing the business. I’ve posted here and many other places that I’ve seen them comment on support issues. Either they are somehow missing this enormous thread or just ignoring it for some reason.

Direct play on Xbox One still constant buffering. I’ll keep this thread alive and keep posting until we get some assistance from Plex support. Only workaround is to transcode (crap workaround) or to direct stream.

You shouldn’t have to give up. Pretty bad we’ve had no comment from Plex in all this time. I do however see them constantly trying to sell me a Tidal subscription.

It’s the Atmos audio codec causing the issues

DTS-MA transcodes to AAC and plays fine even with 4k HDR, Atmos transcodes to AAC as well but causes stuttering and buffering.

Something is going on with the way PLEX and Xbox handles that transcode from Atmos to AAC.

4k HDR with DTS-MA, AC3, AAC etc play fine, TrueHD/Atmos is the culprit

The stuttering and buffering occurs with 1080p content with TrueHD/Atmos - its the audio transcoding that is the issue, not related to the video resolution.

I’m getting the feeling that Plex went down a certain code path with Xbox, and doesn’t see the return of investment it would take to fix these issues. Maybe it’s because there are more Playstation 4’s out there in the wild? That it makes sense to focus on the larger userbases? It’s a shame when the Xbox One is great in terms of a media box with 4k blu-ray on top, and yet we have the worst app of all the Plex ecosystem.

Not for me. My audio is ac3 and it still stutters

When I was still using the Xbox one for playback I had issues regardless of Audio codec.
The actual bitrate seem to also have had very little impact on the issue.

As I said earlier, after the switch to Apple TV I have had no issues, same network, same server same files.

Any update to this issue? It’s super annoying, and sad that nothing has been done in over a year. Xbox One S is a great 4k media machine, and with a working Plex client, it would be perfect.

What do we have to do to get this resolved?

I’ve been suffering with buffering for quite a while now. All my files are 1080p or lower, H265 with AC3 audio. No subtitles (I burn in at the encoding stage) and all in MP4 containers. XBox One (original) is hardwired in to a gigabit network.

Start a movie - Buffering
Skip to a chapter - Buffering
Skip ahead 30secs/back 10secs - Buffering
Any time there’s a bit of action - Buffering

Yesterday I found the recommendation to turn off “Large Send Offload” on my PC running PMS, and since then I only get any kind of buffering when skipping through or selecting chapters, but even then it’s no-where near as painful as it was before.

I had my friend try streaming remotely as he stopped watching due to the same problems. He put on Infinity War and skipped to the Stormbreaker chapter (the first thing that came to mind that he knew he had issues with), and apart from the bit of buffering due to skipping ahead, he had no problem playing through all the way to “Bring me THANOS” at which point he was satisfied he was having no problems.

The file is a 4mb H265, direct streamed to his remote Xbox One (also original, not S or X) over my Virgin Media connection using an 11mb upload.

Now, I know this isn’t 4K, but I see a lot of people here have been having buffering problems regardless of resolution, so hopefully this info will help some of you to a degree.

At the very least, it’s one more thing that can be ruled out, if you’re using a Windows PC for your PMS.

@Monkeylord I tried your suggestion tonight but unfortunately it made no difference. My files are H265 with DTS Passthru audio. The same files play back perfectly on my TV using the Plex client on there.

So it turns out my issue was with a faulty network switch, was dropping to 100 from 1000Mbps. When I restarted it it, it streamed fine for a while, then dropped down to 100 again. The 1000 link light was still lit.

Check or replace your switch if you use one to your Xbox.

@DarrenL81 That sucks, but I guess it at least rules it out for you.

Hi!

I just want to know if there are any news about fixing the buffering issue???

Because I cant watch movies on the xbox, especially not with subs!, I need to turn them off to even start the movie.
Plex works on the Phone, ChromeCast, SmartTVApp and laptop with browser. But the xbox app freezes, crashes and starts buffering all the time. I have two Xbox one and one XboxOneX, don´t work on any of them, they all have the same issue.
I use a" Netgear R9000 Nighthawk x10" as my plexServer and it worked fine until I updated the XboxApp a couple of months ago.
