I’ve been using the Plex plugin for Kodi and everything plays fine on that. It’s not ideal and an extra step but it’s set to boot on Kodi opening and works fine
I wish they would actually fix the app but that’s the workaround

Problem is I don’t think that kodi plug in supports 4k HDR
I have the same issue videos play perfectly on Chromecast but buffers every 15 minutes on an Xbox 1X
not really sure how a thread like this can be open for so long with out answer
I only have issues when the Xbox is over WiFi. Doesn’t matter the source content, it buffers ebdlessly, plug a cable into the Xbox and no buffering issues.
Any other device over WiFi doesn’t have a problem at all.
That is pretty much what I’m seeing as well. Please report these issues on the Xbox when it happens and PM @Moussa as well so he knows more people are seeing this issue.
I’m aware of the issues and have passed on new samples and information provided by you all to Microsoft to see what they can find. Will let you know what they say.
Great news, so the issue was reproducible? In the meantime is their anything we can do on our end to mitigate the problem while MS/Plex comes up with a fix?
Is it really an xbox issue though? If it was, why does plex inside kodi work fine? Check out these two bandwidth plots - both are directplaying the exact same movie. The first one is native Xbox One Plex app, the second is Kodi with Plex plugin. The arrows on the first image show where it paused to buffer. Notice the scales are much different. The kodi one did not buffer at all.
The Native Plex client on the Xbox must be the issue, I also am able to stream no problem native 4k HDR to other devices that support it but it’s always my Xbox One X giving me buffer issues.
I wish the Kodi Plex plug in support 4k HDR if it did I’d just use that instead of the native Xbox Plex client
Here is what happens to me with Direct Stream buffers on Xbox One X
Buffer 1 video plays fine until the network is completely cut off presumably from the Xbox Plex client,
Please note both the Xbox AND the server are online and functional when this drop occurs in plex
Buffer 2, after a few mins of zero network traffic some very small network traffic starts up but the video is still endlessly buffering
@swanlee I reproduced the issue, yes. Haven’t heard back from Microsoft yet about how they got on with it. I don’t know of any possible mitigation, apart from perhaps transcoding down to a lower quality. But obviously that isn’t ideal.
@CrimsonTide Thanks for the interesting graphic. Kodi on Xbox One use their own player stack, while we use the native player stack on the Xbox One (which we have very little control over).
Thanks, great news that at least the issue could be reproduced as that is usually the biggest hurdle to nail down fixes for these types of issues.
I’m still reporting the buffer issue weekly from my Xbox’s report problem feature to MS
Just wanted to say I’m having this issue with 1080p files on the Xbox one x connected via a wired gigabit network. Also thanks for the response @Moussa it is reassuring to know the issue is still on someone’s radar at Plex/Microsoft.
How hard would it be to create your own player stack for the xbox one? Is Kodi’s open source?
Please fix this. Its driving me nuts.
Please submit a bug report a couple of times a week on your Xbox when this happens, in the notes please tell them Plex devs have said this is a platform issue.
Maybe if more of us submit this as a problem they will take it seriously
The Xbox app has been the worst. This app is fkin shameful and embarrassing. I thought having the stupid fkin title of any file being played in the middle of the screen looked retarded, because you know wtf you’re watching obviously, but now it’s the constant buffering box, telling you that it’s buffering. It’s not though, there’s no network activity, it’s just sitting there. I can skip a few seconds or jump in and out of the video and it works, but the buffering box doesn’t disappear. Engineers can delegate their responsibility to others as much as they want, but no one wants to address this broken ■■■■.
Yea this buffer loop issue has been a major issue on and off for well over a year now on the Xbox. It was fixed in the late winter early spring then cropped up again in the summer.
Wish this issue could be fixed once and for all
How is it that this issue still isn’t fixed? It was somewhat better for a small while but it’s back to the same issue as before if not worse! Why is it that Plex had no intention to fix this?
Yea this issue is pretty ridiculous, we have confirmation from @moussa that he was able to reproduce the problem we are all seeing and have given the info to MS.
I agree this issue was pretty much fixed earlier this year and cropped up again in the last couple of months. Given that they fixed this problem once already how hard can it be to fix it again?
We should get an update or be given a direct contact with MS to provide more info and maybe participate in trying out new builds with fixes.
I’m in the Alpha preview program and follow the Xbox Insiders Reddit and this Plex issues is no where to be seen on their known bug issues notes or fix timeline.
We should be getting regular update on the time table that this problem will be fixed.
