emby is working way better for me, no buffering/transcoding and subtitles work although i get a question mark at the end of them on seinfeld.
Tried the new version of plex for xbox one released a couple of days ago.
I started to play a 4k file and was amazed the buffering time was less for startup. Then it started playing things were good.
I thought they had fixed this player.
Then 30 later tautulli
Went FROM:
Transcode container (mkv->mp4)
Video: hevc (direct stream)
Audio: transcode (dts-ma ->aac 5.1)
TO:
Transcode container (mkv->mp4)
Video :transcode (hevc 4k -> h.264 1080p)
Audio: transcode (dts-ma ->aac 5.1
Why does plex for xbox not play mkv containers
Why cant xbox plex handle a 4k that i can chromecast with zero issues.
Please plex rebuild the xbox one x player from the ground up⦠like you did for ios.
im starting to wonder if the xbox is the issue. i had terrible issues with Plex so i finally gave it up a few days ago, now i am having the same exact issues with Emby, it only happens on the xbox and the xbox is the only thing i havent changed.
I know xbox is probably like the appletv. Locked down and restricted. But the new ios apps for plex with the new enhanced player is great. I only wish they could build that into the xbox plex app.
Well, at least it is still a lot better than the PlayStation 3 app. But yes, it needs some more polish.
The MS team does have an upcoming release that addresses 4k playback, but int he release notes it says for apps like Netflix. Not sure if Netflix has to use the same playback api or not, but if so MAYBE a fix is coming.
4k HEVC HDR working perfect for me now!!! Enable direct stream and direct play it works!
Boom!
Iām still having horrible buffering issues. Last night I decided to try the Kodi app instead on a file that was having issues in Plex (constant buffering) and it worked like a charm⦠To be clear the file was a 720p h264 at around 2-3mbits.
Does no-one from the plex team answer these issues anymore?
Plex app buffers on anything above 4mbps 720p now so is complety useless.
However a workaround for me is to use the web player in Edge. I can even play 12mbps 1080p without any buffering at all.
Shows its not the Xbox software but the Plex app.
Iām using the Xbox remotely as away from home, PMP on my laptop is fine also (30mbps download speed according to speedtest)
For me the question of whether the issue is with the Xbox or with Plex is besides the point. The fact is that many paying customers are having issues using the software they paid for and the only response is silence. This is not a good look for the Plex team.
As for me I have officially switched to Emby as it does not have this buffering issue and has many features I wish Plex had. As such I have canceled my auto renewal and this will be my last post. I do hope Plex fixes this issue for everyone else though.
I went to emby too, then it started doing the same thing on my xbox
All files buffer on my xbox one x. I thought it was only 4K but tried to watch 1080p file last night and it buffers every 10-15 minutes. Pretty ridiculous this has been going on this long. I regret paying for a lifetime pass at this point.
Hey, Iām having the same problem too. Up till 2 weeks ago everything worked fine. Then I updated the Armv8 synology server to the latest beta version and although on other devices it worked fine on Xbox One all recently add videos are showing hiccups, stutter and buffering. Itās very odd. I am connected to wifi so will connect over LAN to see if the issue persists but I believe there has been an Xbox One Plex update that causes the issue for certain videos. Some 50GB 4K files work perfect while other 720p not at all. Iām very confused.
Just downgraded back to when it last worked for me which was the latest 1.13 build. No changes in performance. Xbox didnāt receive an update since mid December so itās a Plex client issue. If it continues like this Iāll need to find a new solution.
Ran into the same thing last night. Plex worked great on my Xbox one x for most of last year until I tried it again last night. On a 1080 film it gets the buffers error every 20-30 minutes. Had to stop the film and restart it. Again would run for another 20-30minutes and happen again. The plex app was updated on Jan 10 on my Xbox. Makes using plex on Xbox as useless. Currently I would not recommend using Xbox as a streaming device for plex.
Having the same issue as of 2 days ago. This is for any file of any size. Starting something new I can watch a few minutes but then it starts to buffer and just keeps on buffering. Then to try and resume something it goes directly to buffer and nothing happens.
Sad that there is no information from Place about this as I have loved it until nowā¦
I am also experiencing the frequent buffering problem with 10-bit HDR HEVC files on Xbox One X using Direct Play and Direct Stream. Videos will buffer and hang forever. This totally ruins the viewing experience and makes it a chore, not a joy, to watch my videos.
I do not experience these issues if I use the Plex app on my Samsung Q6F TV. While this is a viable workaround, it is a hassle to have to change remotes and mess with the receiver to make this happen when I can control everything else from a single remote, and I explicitly purchased the lifetime pass with the idea I would be using Plex with my XBOX One X.
I find the lack of response from Plex staff to be extremely disappointing for an issue that has been public for such an extended period of time.

Plex Media Server is running in an iocage (FreeBSD) jail on FreeNAS with OpenVPN installed. It is only used locally on the internal network, other than gathering metadata. As stated previously, problems only seem to occur in the Xbox One X app.
Please release some new information on this issue.
I just recently realized that when I moved my Xbox One from my plasma TV to my projector I forgot to change it from 720P to 1080P. After changing it to 1080P I can no longer play any videos through Plex it just keeps buffering. I can play videos through Netflix just fine on it though. I will have to swap the Xbox back to 720P and see if it goes back to playing the videos just fine.
Sounds like your subtitles are forcing a transcode and it isnāt detecting the iGPU because of the Jail so the CPU is choking on the effort.
I have the drm-stable-kmod port for FreeBSD 11.2 installed which should cover the Intel drivers, although I havenāt done any extensive testing on this since I am getting ādirect play: trueā on video anyhow. It seems, however, that the Xbox Plex app isnāt allowing passthrough of TrueHD audio and is forcing a transcode which, for some reason, causes the video to hang. If I switch to AC3 audio on a broken video, it plays. This does seem to give me an answer as to the root of the problem but definitely not the one I wanted, as from further digging it appears that the Plex app simply doesnāt have access inside the Xbox to pass high-end audio streams through to my Denon AVR-X6400H receiver without transcoding. I hope they work this out with Microsoft as this is pretty disappointing. Iāll definitely be switching to my TVās app to get the proper audio streams.
