Constant stuttering when watching with subtitles

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973
Player Version#: 4.11.1

This has been going on for a few weeks now. Media with subtitles (pretty much all ASS) will stop and stutter every second and is entirely unwatchable. It transcodes the media when subtitles are on, but if I turn them off it returns to playing in original quality.

This is happening with pretty much 1080p x265 content with ASS subtitles. It’s occurring on new content and also downloaded stuff which has played fine in the past.

If I switch the player to burn “only image formats” it has fixed one or two different series but many still stutter.

It obviously is an issue with the subtitles because if I turn them off the player reverts to “original quality”

What kills me about it is, this stuff has been working fine with no changes done by me. One day I paused a show that was working fine. I came back to the same episode the next day and it was no longer working and now other old content won’t work either.

I know Plex is able to handle ASS subs so why would it start transcoding them all of a sudden?

Nothing at all?

I had a very similar problem. In my case the movie wouldn’t play when “auto subtitle” was selected, but would play if subs were turned off and then back on once the movie had started playing. Took me a good while to figure out as decreasing the quality also helped with some movies. It was coming up with the error “my connection to the server is not fast enough”, or something like that.

Movies would play fine without subs, and I read somewhere that certain subtitles can seriously labour a NAS transcoding capabilities. Add the fact I had recently added a camera, I thought it was just under too much pressure.

Anyway, Noticed today that there was a plex update for my NAS. Loaded that up and everything seems to be fine again. So I’m guessing that it was the last plex update that caused the problem, but I had so much else going on, with the camera and a hardware upgrade, that it was hard to figure what had gone wrong.

Hope this helps…

Looks as though I’m up to date on everything. Still no luck. Alas.

Also, it appears I cannot edit my main post so I’ll add here that my latest update for Plex on the LG tv was 8/21 to put me on 2.1.3 which is confusing. The LG content store says 2.1.3, but the app says “Plex for LG” is on 4.11.1 and the webOS is 3.8.0.

I don’t know a precise time it started acting this way but that seems like a believable start point. I really don’t know, though.

this has been going on forever, let’s face it noone cares to fix it

I hadn’t checked it in a while. It appears that everything is working fine again. The Plex server is fully up to date and I see the LG OS has updated to 4.13.1. I’m not sure which of those updates fixed the issue, but I can assure you I’ve changed nothing on my end aside from switching the subtitle burn in option to “do only image formats.”

Here’s the real kicker. I even turned the subtitle burn in back to automatic. It’s transcoding again. It’s STILL working perfectly fine. It’s transcoding my x265 with no issue. Previously it would skyrocket my cpu usage to 100% and stutter til I stopped it. Now the usage goes up for a few seconds and then everything is perfectly fine. No buffering.

I sadly can’t tell you what fixed it for it was nothing I did, but I can say it’s working again after all the most recent updates. Hopefully it remains that way.

It was fixed for a few days, last night I was watching a movie perfectly and today, tried to watch the rest of it and the stuttering and buffering came back. I m really tired of it, and Noone really cares to fix it

Mine’s been MOSTLY fixed. I marked it solved but I did run into the issue once again when resuming something that I had paused. No issues most of the time, though, and none when starting from the beginning.

I am having the exact same issue with my LG TV Plex App. Horrible stuttering with .ASS subtitle files enabled. Stopped working around the time Plex updated the transcoder to be more “efficient”.

Same issue here… Constant stuttering on TV with subtitles. My server is on a 6C Intel kabylake with an Nvidia GPU (on the same network as the TV)
Anyone managed to find a solution to this?
Thanks!

Going to keep reposting until Plex deigns to make a response.

No subtitles work for me, stuttering is constant any time subs are enabled.

as someone said above, I solved this issue (very annoying indeed!) by turning off the subtitles when I start the movie (or tv show or whatever) and then turning them again during playback after 30sec or so.
but I still cannot load subtitles for those video which have the subtitles embedded in the video (such as mp4)… even if I add an external srt file (with the same name as the video file) I cannot see the subtitles…

The only way i solved this was a roll back of the server i went back to version 1.15.6.1079 however with the recent post that we must update for thetvdb info to pull down has me mad again. Anyone know if the most recent version is working?

Nope, no movement or communication from Plex still. This is still a problem and all subtitled media is unwatchable!

Turning off subs and letting it buffer then turning them on does not work for me.

Another week gone by, another week with no reply or information or support for Plex about the completely broken subtitle support on LG TVs.

Same problem for a long time, i wonder when it will be solved by PLEX?
The image looks pixelated when i put the subtitles. The only way to see the movies with subtitles is TURNING OFF THE HARDWARE ACCELERATION. The problem appear when the hardware transcode the subtitles, but if you turn it off and play 2 o 3 movies running at the same time the CPU goes to 100%.

PLEX WE NEED A SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM!!!

@COCO-FLIX Your problem is probably the Intel driver issue. You can either delete the offending driver or load a test version of PMS.

I’ve had the same problem for months. I went so far as to buy a shield to try to get around it and I’m getting sound sync issues on the shield plex app. This is driving me crazy, I really just want the LG Plex app to play subtitled videos without stuttering constantly. The bizarre thing is files are generally fine when played from the start but if I need to start a file from part way through or fast forward or rewind I am left with a stuttering mess. I have an 8700k and a 2080, this shouldn’t be an issue to play a single 1080p stream.

Imagine a day when the Plex LG app is actually able to play video with subtitles.
