Content suddenly inaccessible (Please check that the file exists...)

Server Version#: Version 1.23.2.4656

Hi, I currently have Plex installed on a Windows 10 machine, content libraries are network shares (eg: \NasName\NasFolder\CategoryFolder) - All shares are from the same source.

Whether it is from the Media Server PC or any other deice, suddenly, I can’t play any files and they are unavailable - The error is ‘Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted.’

I’ve done all of the troubleshooting regarding this error but it has not resolved the problem.

The path is valid, I can get there via Explorer, all the content remains as it was. Nothing has changed as far as I can tell.

When I attempt to paste the network link in the add library section, I can see that it can’t get to the NAS as it won’t list the available folders in that network location - I am assuming its a permissions problem but I’m not sure where or how to configure permissions for Plex\Windows\NAS (syno) -

Happy to post a log but it’s a big 20mb zip file - Not sure if i am to post a specific file or the whole thing.

Thanks

How are you making those files from your Synology available in your network (e.g. SMB, NFS…)? Have you configured the NAS to require a login to access its data – if so… did you by chance recently change any of those credentials?

Are you running the Plex Media Server under your own user or “as a service”. If the PMS is not running as yourself, make sure the service user can still see/access your NAS.

Hi, running S/mb and yes there is a login\pass to the NAS which i havent altered.

Running PMS under my own user - I changed the windows username\pass but have changed them back as i suspected maybe it was that.

Windows user name and password must be identically created on the NAS.

Don’t expect that Windows will remember the stored access credentials for the file share. It won’t (reliably).

OK, so:

  • changed the windows password
  • created a new login\pass in the NAS to match Windows login\pass
  • Changed the original NAS login\pass forcing Windows to prompt me to enter new credentials
  • Entered new credentials in to match windows login\pass
  • Reset PC for good measure

Still no luck.

Do you get the same issue if you map that share to a local drive letter and connect that instead?

yep. Tried that prior to updating\matching login\passes - Just tried it again, same result. Plex doesn’t see the mapped drive, I have to paste the link in. It doesn’t see the file in the drive showing no content.

Any other suggestions?

Keep in mind that stored passwords don’t work at all when running Plex under a different user account. So make sure that plex server is only started under your regular Windows user account.

I’d try to remove older stored access credentials from your Windows account Remove Network Credentials from Windows 10 | Endurtech

Then go with the above mentioned method to unify user name and password on both Windows and NAS.
(You may have to log out of your Windows account and back in, if you created the same-named user account on your NAS only recently).

Do also keep in mind that Windows can only maintain one set of credentials for one server. If you have a NAS with several file shares and you are using several different user names and passwords to access them, it might not work as expected.

A post was split to a new topic: Can’t access some folders anymore - DSM7

Just an update. I attempted a repair install and was prompted with a window asking for PMS - That made me suspicious of the install as it wouldn’t complete the repair. I downloaded a fresh copy of Plex server, installed it over the existing and all came good. Not sure it was ever a permissions problem. Thanks for your help guys.
