Continue playback feature lost when using downloaded/synced content?

I’ve been using plex for a couple of years now mainly for the continue playback feature so I can always start watching right where I finished off and know what I’ve already seen.

I recently thought I’d try out plexpass mainly so I could use the download/sync content function to watch some shows without running the server all the time.

Syncing/downloading or getting the devices on my phone seemed simply enough however I soon realised plex wasn’t recognising the episodes I’d watched or how far in I’d gotten.

Is this typical of synced media?
Also am I overcomplicating things? I just want plex’s functionality with media that’s already downloaded on my phone.

Hope to hear some insights
Thanks

Might want to combine forces as I think you have the same issue as this person: Played and Unplayed status

Looks like both of you are experiencing sync issues with watch status on downloaded TV shows.

I just confirmed it is only with watching a downloaded episodes and nothing to do with streaming an episode. These are the two logs immediately after…on from the android client and one from the serverplex-log-Android-missionsparta.zip (1.6 MB)
Uploading: Plex Media Server Logs_2021-09-06_17-48-32.zip…

Anyone with some knowledge able to look at these logs?

I’m also having the same. If I finish watching a downloaded item past 95% completion (give or take) where it would normally mark as played, still shows up in the online “continue watching area”.

When not complete, the watched percentage does not match after reopening the app to allow time to sync.

I’m having the same issue like you…

mine doesn’t even mark as played or continue watching if i finish an episode or end it early
man just wants to jump in and out init
no stream just downloaded/synced episodes

I’m with you guys… Streamed content works fine, but downloaded ones…
Sometimes after watching them they show as played on the downloads library, but the item on the “normal” library shows as continue playing, with some minutes still unplayed.
Lately, the downloaded content just won’t update played status, shows as unplayed, and if you do one mid play it might show the yellow progress bar, sometimes just as if it were never played, and anyway, if you try to continue it it starts from beginning.
The option to skip to next episode is completely lost on the download library too, even if there are available ones.
If a download is broken i.e. partially downloaded, trying to play it will cause plex to reboot (at least on Android). On the streaming library it will do the same as it keeps trying to play the broken one, no option at all like the old sync where you could choose which one to play, streamed or synced. Only way to fix this is deleting the download ones causing the problem.

Same here. The new Downloads thing seems to be good in terms of actually working and not being as flaky about when and why things are downloaded. However, not syncing the watched flags, not being able to mark a thing as watched, and not being able to delete an individual episode from downloads is annoying.

We use sync (downloads) to take whatever show we’re watching on a trip with us. We want it to sync the next several episodes in the series, keep syncing more as we travel, and then keep the home server updated on what we’ve watched so we can continue on the TV when we get home. Downloads seems to have broken that workflow.

Because sync was so unreliable, I would generally make sure we were sync’d a couple days before leaving so I didn’t get into the situation where I’m trying to walk out the door and arguing with plex which refuses to download things. Now, that means we end up with download syncing several days of things we’ve already watched and when we get somewhere, not remembering which ones we already watched at home.

So, kudos on making downloads not so maddening to operate. But, I think it still needs to work to keep it integrated with the rest of plex. At least let me mark downloads as watched manually!

Same here, 2 different android devices and episodes are never marked as fully played, only some percentage, even when viewing until the end.

.

And still not fixed.
