This HowTo applies to this player only: Plex Media Player
The mvp.zip file doesn’t seem to work anymore. Can I get a copy of this if anyone has it?
Thanks
Just copy the text into a text editor and save it.

This new update brought this function to the plex for windows app, just here to say thank you. I hated it when I cannot customize subtitle position in the plex app.
Indeed.
I updated the instructions in the top post to include Plex for Windows/Mac.
Please test and report any errors I may have made!
Don’t know if anyone already knows this but I wanted to show you a way you can customize the subs even easier using Aegisub.
- Create an empty Aegisub file (.ass)
- Set up different styles in the Style Manager. The style name has to be the same used in the subtitle track of the movie/tv show episodes.
- Save it anywhere. I use my mpv location.
- Now add
sub-ass-styles=PATHTO.ASSFILE
to your mpv.conf
PMP now overrides every .ass subtitle style that matches the style names you created. Making your .ass subs look the same.
YES!! Thank you for adding support now I can use the new desktop app!
I don’t know if your subtitles and video resolutions are the same, it may be caused by scaling, you can try adding this command to the ass file, it may be useful.
[Script Info]
ScaledBorderAndShadow: no
Has anyone recently managed to change this option?? I tried everything and nothing. I downloaded plex htpc and still. I don’t know if I’m following the steps right, in which folder do I have to put this mpv file???
I’ve been looking for an alternative for years to improve the subtitles in the plex and it never works. I just wanted one simple thing, make the caption in bold
or put a black background so that the caption would stand out more, the default caption is too thin. I have a hard time seeing things subtitled in plex because of this. on tv I don’t miss it so much because its screen is quite big, but on pc the black background is really missed.
I wanted it to be more or less like this
The support article which was supposed to explain the folder location has changed without me noticing.
I have now changed the text accordingly. Please go back up and re-read.
You may want to add this line to get the solid background:
--sub-back-color=0/0/0/0.7
You can experiment with the last number a bit. The closer you get to 1.0, the less transparent the background will be.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am new to this whole process. If there is already an mpv.conf file in the appropriate folder, can I just add the subtitle information to it or do I add a second mpv.conf file? I assume I just add the text to the one there but wanted to make sure. Thanks!
the mpv.conf doesn’t exist on a new install of HTPC.
But if you have that exact file, then you would just add your commands to it.
Maybe you were looking at mpv.conf.md the readme file?
If you’re on Windows, enable the visibility of file name extensions in file explorer.
Otherwise you’ll be constantly asking yourself what the actual file name of any given file is. (And following instructions as the above is confusing without knowing the precise file name.)
It is an mpv.conf file and not mpv.conf.md. I think I had created it before for something else when I first got started.
What was already in the file is this:
vo=gpu-next
target=colorspace-hint=yes
pls-ca-file=C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex HTPC\resources\cacert.pem
Just insert a line break and add the instructions for the subtitles.
Do you know what the command lines are for that I posted above?
DDG says GPU transcoding and/or tone mapping. Not sure why you needed to add the path to the cert, but those are for secure connections on Plex, like connecting to plex.tv to pass your token and whatnot.
I’d experiment without the first two and see if I can tell a difference. No reason to mess with the cert, but Otto may clear this up if I’m incorrect.
Thanks! I now remember… It was for HDR metadata passthrough.
This doesn’t seem to work for me. I’m using Plex HTPC on Mac.
I mainly want to move the subs from under the video to the bottom of the video.
I have the mpv file with the added text in the Plex HTPC folder.
Anyone else have better luck?
It will only work if the video stream doesn’t contain black bars on top and bottom.
