Every Android app update on Pixel 4 XL renames device to "Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook"

Server Version#:

  • Plex Media Server 1.18.5.2309-f5213a238 on beta channel
  • Synology DS1813+ running DSM 6.2.2-24922 Update 4

Player Version#:

  • Plex Android App 7.28.0.15196 (7057ab81) in beta program
  • Pixel 4 XL running Android 10 QQ1B.200105.004
    • Android Security Patch Level January 1, 2020
    • Google Play System Update December 31, 2019

From what I know, this is the latest stable Synology DSM and Android 10 and latest beta of PMS and Android client.

The name of the device is what comes up in
Settings → Advanced → Device name
and then is used in various places in the UI (eg, for local/synced content) and in Plex Web when looking at lists of devices (eg, to decide sync targets).

I’ll change the name back to “Pixel 4 XL” after every Plex app update, and then after the next update, it will reassert “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”. This has been happening with every combination of PMS, Plex app, and Android 10 versions on my Pixel 4 XL since I set it up in December 2019. (Incidentally, I upgraded my Synology from DSM 5.2 in early January and then PMS from 1.13 to the latest version, but these had no effect on what seems pretty clearly a Plex Android app issue.)

That was also after I updated the server to 1.18.6.2368-97add474d.

Yeah mine has been doing it as well.

I’m actually super curious what could be causing that and where that name is coming from!

Checking to see if any of our guys have a Pixel 4 with 10

What is the device name of the actual device in Settings>About Phone

“Pixel 4 XL”. That’s the default it came with and remains that.

And that’s what I keep renaming the device in Plex.

I feel a bit silly for not mentioning this earlier, but some time ago, I found two other people (who posted on Reddit) who have the same problem.

no worries. thanks for pointing it out. it does seem to be limited the Pixel 4XL for some reason.

Indeed. I should also have mentioned that I have no such issue on any of the following devices:

  • Pixel XL
  • Pixel 2 XL
  • Pixel 3 XL
  • Pixel Slate

Coincidentally, this was after PMS update to 1.18.7.2434 (db2335ec5).

And I forgot to mention that in early February, I had updated the Android OS with the February 5, 2020 security patch, so I’m on build QQ1B.200205.002.

(I’ve since updated PMS to 1.18.7.2438 (f342a5a43).)

I tried to reproduce it on my Pixel 4 but it worked fine for me. We’ve opened an internal ticket to investigate and fix it. Any chance you could share app logs after updating (and therefore reproducing) the issue? Thanks in advance

Is that just through “Share debugging data” and uploading here?

Shall I do it immediately after the next update, before renaming back to “Pixel 4 XL” (which is its current name that I manually reset after the last update)?

I think this is only affecting Pixel 4 XLs and no other models of any other phones.

When clicking “Share debugging data”, you can email the logs to me [email removed] or upload them here, up to you.

Yes please

Unfortunately it seems so, hopefully the logs would give us a clue about why is that happening.

Thanks in advance
