Every Android app update on Pixel 4 XL renames device to "Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook"

Happened again on update to 7.29.0.15822 (8d88947c).

This was after I updated PMS to 1.18.8.2468 (5d395aa9d) and Android 10 to the February 1, 2020 Google Play system update.

@jesusmc: I exported another set of debugging data and another Android bug report after updating this morning. Would you like me to send those to you, too, or are the previous ones sufficient?

Please send them to me again. Thanks

App logs and bug reports sent to @jesusmc for both 7.29.0.15822 (8d88947c) and 7.29.0.15846 (e55f5d7f) updates.

Would you mind using a custom version of the app adding extra logs? Can prepare it tomorrow.
Thanks in advance

Absolutely. Will you let me know what extra logs I might add? I thought I was already sending you everything I could!

I guess it might be PMS logs?

Sorry, what I meant is if you would mind using a custom apk built (by me) on top of current beta one in which I’ve added some extra logs around the area in which the app handles the device name in upgrades.

Oh, yes, absolutely! I totally got that that was what you were asking about the first time! Sorry I was unclear in my followup response/question.

Got it; now I understand. I didn’t get at first that you were instrumenting more logging in the custom apk; I thought you might have been asking if I would be willing to test an apk that potentially fixes the issue and to send you additional logs. But now I’m clear!

Plex updated in the middle of the night last night. This morning, I installed the March 5, 2020 Android security update. After restarting, I captured Plex’s app logs after noting that the problem recurred.

Now I’m on Android 10 build QQ2A.200305.004.A1, but we don’t have conclusive confirmation that the renaming behavior would manifest on a Plex app installation/update after this security update. But I think we can make a reasonable guess that it probably would.

FWIW, I haven’t received anything by email about the custom version of the app (for the more verbose logging). I can email the app logs that I captured, but I’m not certain they will be particularly diagnostically useful beyond the previous ones I emailed.

I’ve captured both the Plex app logs and another Android bug report, both after a fresh restart and confirming that the problem recurred.

I can confirm this is happening to me as well on Pixel 4 XL.

Plex Android App 7.29.2.16071 (71e4f554).

Happened again on update to 7.30.0.16150 (cf9ef005).

This time, the app updated automatically overnight, so the in-app diagnostic logs I captured weren’t after a fresh restart, if that makes any difference.

Looks like ā€œPixel 4 XLā€ as a name stuck when upgrading to 7.30.0.16183 (b9eeac67). Could this be a permanent fix!?

Sorry to bop in here, but I thought I’d mention I’m having a similar problem. My phone is a Sony Xperia X Compact, and the device is now being listed as ā€œCANVAS DOODLE 3ā€ on my Authorized Devices page.

Interesting, as far as I know we haven’t done anything about that (I came here to say sorry for coming to you so late).

I’ll of course report back on the next update!

Well, bad news:

Happened again on update to 7.30.0.16218 (8007e7af).

I updated immediately after a fresh restart, then took app debug logs and an Android bug report.

I’m pretty sure that I didn’t miss anything on the update to 7.30.0.16183 (b9eeac67), where the ā€œPixel 4 XLā€ name stuck from the previous renaming. So now I’m super curious what the differences are between these few successive builds!

I’m working on a special v7.30 build with extra logs around that area atm, I’ll share it with you when ready. Thanks in advance

The team has identified the issue (a tricky one) and will work on it soon!

Thanks for your help!

I’m so happy to be able to help, even in this small way. I love Plex so much and am delighted to be able to advance its improvement! Please don’t hesitate to let me know if there’s anything else I can do!

I’ll keep posting here as the app updates, in case that ends up being helpful to other users.
