I couldn’t even tell you what happens on 8.12.0.22456 (2a97bfe9), since the app crashes immediately on launch, even after clearing cache and restarting. I’m reluctant to clear all app data, because then I will need to reconfigure all my customizations and redownload all my locally synced content. So maybe the next version will be stable…
EDIT: I take it back. Plex Web shows my Pixel 4 XL as having been online (so I guess the app doesn’t crash before communicating with the server), and it retained the name “Pixel 4 XL”.
There were a few app updates since my last comment here, and up to 8.12.0.22657 (3794daa3), the name “Pixel 4 XL” has been preserved.
Interestingly, the Android app stopped crashing when I updated the Trakt plugin to 1.3.3 using the Unsupported App Store and cleared its cache (which I did to try to get it to work again), but that’s seemingly orthogonal to the present issue.

Yeah!
