[Feature Request] Media Version Labels

The very popular “Multiple Cuts of a Movie” thread, addresses this topic in a more involved manner. However, maybe due to the complexity / intricacy of the ideas and needs to be met, five years later, the feature has not yet been implemented.

So I would like to propose, perhaps, a simpler idea using things Plex can already do.

Currently, when creating optimized versions of media, if you choose a custom conversion type, you can leave the “Quality Name” blank, or you can type in whatever label you want. Then, when playing the video, as you select which version of the media to play … the label you chose (or “Custom”) will be displayed before the appropriate video. Similarly, when looking at the Plex Server Settings > Optimized Versions, the labels for the optimized versions can be edited. So the core coding for displaying labels, when selecting versions to play, has already been done.

Can that same underlined functionality can be used to allow users to label the various versions of their videos?

Since the functionality already exists, perhaps it’s just a matter of “where” to allow users to enter labels. Which in that case then the appropriate location might be on the video’s “Get Info” / “Media Info” window. That window lists the details of the file(s) pertaining to that entry, along with the path of the file(s), and a “Delete Files” link (if file management is enabled). – Before the “Delete Files” link, there can be an edit icon for each relevant file. Clicking on the edit button would allow the user to edit the label for that file. Or perhaps, double-clicking on the filename / path would allow editing the label.

By extending this existing functionality to all files, users would be able to differentiate between the various versions of the file that they have. Without having to blindly figure out which resolution, bitrate, etc. is pertaining to the version they wish to play. =)

Some of you might be wanting this. Please like it if it’s what you want.
